Technical Delivery Lead
Salary: £45,000 per annum
Location: Remote – UK based

Thornacre is a UK software engineering consultancy delivering secure, reliable and scalable digital services for public-sector and regulated organisations.
We work across software development, cloud infrastructure, data platforms and digital services, taking responsibility for projects from initial requirements through development, testing, deployment and ongoing support.
We are a remote-first UK team and work collaboratively across engineering, delivery and client stakeholders. We are looking for someone who can take ownership of the day-to-day delivery of several concurrent software projects and help ensure that work moves efficiently from requirement through to production.
Role Description
The Technical Delivery Lead is responsible for the successful day-to-day delivery of multiple software and technology projects.
This is a hands-on delivery role combining elements of technical project management and technical product ownership.
You will work closely with clients, developers and technical leads to understand requirements, maintain and prioritise project backlogs, coordinate development work, manage releases and ensure projects remain on track.
You do not need to be a full-time software developer, but you must be technically confident. You should be comfortable discussing software architecture, APIs, databases, cloud infrastructure, source control, CI/CD pipelines and deployments with engineers.
You will act as the link between client requirements and the engineering team, ensuring that requirements are understood, work is properly defined and prioritised, blockers are removed and clients have clear visibility of progress.
Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day delivery of multiple concurrent software projects.
- Own and maintain project backlogs.
- Translate client and business requirements into clearly defined epics, user stories, tasks and acceptance criteria.
- Prioritise work with clients, developers and technical leads.
- Plan development iterations, releases and project milestones.
- Coordinate developers, QA and other technical team members.
- Facilitate sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews and retrospectives where appropriate.
- Track progress against agreed timelines, budgets and deliverables.
- Identify and manage risks, dependencies, blockers and scope changes.
- Work with engineers to coordinate deployments across development, staging and production environments.
- Understand technical issues sufficiently to assess impact, facilitate decisions and communicate them clearly to clients.
- Support release planning and ensure appropriate testing and sign-off takes place before deployment.
- Maintain clear project documentation and delivery records.
- Provide clients and internal stakeholders with concise and accurate progress reporting.
- Manage expectations and communicate changes, risks and trade-offs early.
- Help continuously improve Thornacre's delivery processes and ways of working.

Technical Knowledge
You should have enough technical understanding to work confidently with software engineers and participate in technical delivery discussions.
Experience or familiarity with some of the following would be beneficial:
- Software development lifecycle
- Web application development
- APIs and system integrations
- Git and source control
- CI/CD pipelines
- Development, staging and production environments
- Cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS
- Docker and containerised applications
- Databases
- Application monitoring and logging
- Software testing and QA processes
- Release and deployment processes
You will not normally be expected to write production code, but previous software development or engineering experience would be particularly valuable.

Qualifications and Experience
- Experience managing the delivery of software, digital or technology projects.
- Experience managing multiple projects or workstreams simultaneously.
- Strong understanding of Agile delivery approaches such as Scrum and Kanban.
- Experience managing and prioritising software development backlogs.
- Ability to turn business requirements into actionable development tasks and acceptance criteria.
- Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle.
- Sufficient technical knowledge to work effectively with software engineers and technical leads.
- Experience coordinating software releases and deployments.
- Strong stakeholder and client-management skills.
- Ability to communicate technical subjects clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong organisation, prioritisation and time-management skills.
- Ability to identify delivery risks and proactively resolve blockers.
- Comfortable working independently within a remote team.
- Experience with tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, GitHub or equivalent delivery platforms.
Previous experience as a Technical Delivery Manager, Technical Project Manager, Technical Product Owner, Delivery Lead, Product Owner or Software Engineer moving into delivery would be particularly relevant.
A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline is useful but not required where equivalent practical experience can be demonstrated.
Working at Thornacre
This is a fully remote position within a UK-based team.
Applicants must be based in the UK and have the right to work in the UK.
The role offers significant ownership and is suited to someone who enjoys working between clients and engineering teams rather than operating solely as a traditional project manager.
Salary: £45,000 per annum.
