Technical Designer / Draughtsperson (Scenic Construction)
£35,000 to £39,000 depending on experience

About Design Stage
Scenic construction is at the heart of what we do, from theatre, opera and screen to live events, luxury weddings, themed entertainment, exhibitions and retail. We provide the technical design and draughting that turns concepts into information that can be built, assembled, transported and installed internationally.
Right now, that's me, James, working with a small group of trusted freelancers. This is the company's first full-time role. The work has grown to the point where I need someone permanent alongside me, and whoever joins will help shape how the studio works as it grows.
The Role
You will work directly on live projects for established workshops, producers and venues. Expect variety: an opera one day, an exhibition or a large-scale event the next. Day to day you will be:
- Producing 3D models and 2D construction drawings for scenery and built elements
- Creating CNC and fabrication files for workshops
- Developing designers' concepts into buildable technical information
- Resolving construction, assembly and access issues before they reach the workshop or site
- Producing visualisations where a project calls for them
- Liaising with production teams, designers and fabricators

Depending on experience, the role can also include client liaison (occasionally in person), quotations, project management, coordinating freelancers and mentoring future team members.
Essential
- Strong 3D modelling and 2D draughting skills
- Proven experience producing steel and timber workshop construction drawings within scenic construction, exhibition, events or a similar fabrication environment
- A real understanding of how things get built, with drawings produced with the workshop and site in mind
- Comfortable working remotely and managing your own time
- Clear communication, as almost all coordination happens remotely
- Proficiency in Rhino, or the ability to get up to speed quickly from similar 3D software
Desirable
- Rendering and visualisation skills
- Blender experience
- Experience coordinating directly with workshops and production teams
- Hands-on experience in a workshop or on site, such as carpentry, welding and fabrication, CNC operation or set assembly
If you are coming from AutoCAD, Inventor or similar, that is not a barrier. I will support the transition.
