I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The Role
The Technical Development Manager sits at the intersection of engineering and leadership: hands-on enough to review code, weigh in on architecture, and step into the codebase when it matters, while also owning the day-to-day management, growth, and delivery of a team of developers.
This role is based in our new Guildford office alongside the development team.
Key Responsibilities
Hands-on technical
- Write and review code, and stay active in the codebase on key features or when the team needs extra bandwidth
- Set and enforce engineering standards: code quality, testing, documentation, and secure coding practice
- Shape technical architecture and design decisions, weighing trade-offs with senior developers
- Own technical risk: identify debt, security issues, and scalability concerns before they become blockers
Team leadership
- Own the product and its delivery end-to-end - not just team execution, but outcomes, scope, and timelines
- Manage a team of developers day to day: workload, priorities, and delivery against sprint or project goals
- Conduct one-to-ones, set objectives, and lead performance reviews and career development conversations
- Report progress, risks, and resourcing needs to senior leadership
- Foster a healthy team culture: psychological safety, constructive code review, and sustainable pace
