Technical Director – EMEA Data Centers
Role Overview
The Technical Director, EMEA Data Centers is the senior technical authority for data center project delivery across the EMEA region. The role is responsible for establishing and maintaining technical excellence across all hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data center projects, ensuring consistent delivery to the highest engineering, quality, safety, and client standards.
The Technical Director provides hands-on technical leadership on complex programmes while developing the technical standards, governance, and capability that underpin the regional Data Center business. Working in close partnership with the EMEA Head of Data Centers on strategy, client engagement, and business growth, and with the EMEA Head of Operations on delivery governance, resource planning, and operational performance, the Technical Director ensures that technical excellence is embedded consistently across all EMEA markets.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Governance
- Own and continuously develop the EMEA Data Center Technical Delivery Framework, including engineering assurance, design reviews, commissioning, testing, validation, and handover standards.
- Act as the senior technical authority and escalation point for complex engineering, MEP, commissioning, and construction issues across the regional portfolio.
- Establish and enforce technical governance processes, including design stage gates, technical approvals, quality assurance, and engineering compliance.
- Drive consistency of technical delivery methodologies across all EMEA markets.
- Represent the business within relevant industry bodies, technical forums, and standards organisations to maintain market-leading technical expertise.
Technical Project Oversight
- Provide executive technical oversight for the region's most complex, strategic, or high-value data center programmes from feasibility through commissioning and operational readiness.
- Partner with Project Directors and country leadership to proactively identify and mitigate technical, programme, commercial, and delivery risks.
- Ensure consistent application of engineering standards, technical documentation, project controls, and commissioning processes across all projects.
- Support recovery planning and technical intervention on projects that fall outside agreed performance, quality, or programme expectations.
- Chair technical reviews, gateway approvals, and critical design decisions where appropriate.

Client Leadership
- Develop trusted relationships with client engineering, design, construction, and operations leadership across strategic hyperscale and colocation accounts.
- Provide senior technical leadership during pursuits, bids, proposals, framework negotiations, and major project mobilisations.
- Lead technical due diligence, value engineering initiatives, and post-project lessons learned with clients.
- Act as the executive technical representative for key client engagements across the region.
Engineering Excellence & Technical Expertise
- Maintain deep expertise in hyperscale, colocation, and mission-critical facility design, construction, commissioning, and operational readiness.
- Monitor emerging technologies and industry trends including AI infrastructure, high-density computing, advanced cooling technologies, grid constraints, renewable energy integration, and power resilience.
- Provide technical guidance on jurisdiction-specific regulatory, planning, sustainability, and grid-connection requirements across EMEA.
- Promote engineering innovation while maintaining operational reliability and client confidence.
Digital Delivery & Innovation
- Champion adoption of the Ingenious platform and other digital delivery technologies to improve project visibility, reporting, engineering assurance, and programme performance.
- Identify and implement innovative technologies, construction methodologies, and delivery approaches that improve speed-to-market, quality, safety, and operational outcomes.
- Partner with clients and internal teams to develop technical innovations that deliver measurable commercial and operational value.
Risk, Quality, Compliance & HSSE
- Ensure all projects comply with company and client HSSE requirements, maintaining zero tolerance for critical safety or engineering non-conformance.
- Own technical risk reporting within regional governance forums, escalating significant issues to the EMEA Head of Data Centers and EMEA Head of Operations as appropriate.
- Ensure engineering assurance, commissioning, testing, validation, and handover documentation fully satisfies client, statutory, and regulatory requirements.
- Promote a culture of quality, technical accountability, and continuous improvement across the regional business.

Capability & People Development
- Develop technical capability across EMEA through mentoring, coaching, structured training, and knowledge sharing.
- Support recruitment, succession planning, and development of senior engineering and technical talent.
- Establish and lead an EMEA Data Center Technical Community of Practice to promote consistency, innovation, and best practice.
- Foster collaboration across disciplines and markets to build a high-performing technical organisation.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree qualified in Engineering, Building Services, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng), MRICS, or equivalent professional accreditation preferred.
- Minimum 15 years' experience delivering complex data center programmes, including significant hyperscale and/or colocation experience.
- Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary engineering and technical teams across multiple EMEA jurisdictions.
- Extensive knowledge of mission-critical MEP systems, commissioning, integrated systems testing (IST), energisation, and operational readiness.
- Strong understanding of engineering governance, quality management, project controls, and technical risk management.
- Proven ability to build trusted relationships with senior client engineering, construction, and operational stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, influencing, and executive stakeholder management skills.
- Fluent English is essential; additional European language capability is advantageous.
- Willingness to travel extensively across EMEA.
