Role: Head of Technical

Responsible for:

Technical team

Geographical remit:

South West – Bristol, Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire

Working arrangements:

Hybrid working on offer between home, office and site including 2 days working from home, 1 day from site and 2 days from the office


Head of Technical - Summary of the Role:

The Head of Technical will support site development and the attainment of targets through the management of all technical services, including all technical, engineering and architectural aspects of the business from land acquisition through to site completions and final adoptions.

The Head of Technical leads technical delivery across the company’s development programme, from land acquisition and planning through to design, construction and completion. The role drives consistency, quality and process improvement across the Technical Team and acts as the senior point of escalation for complex technical issues.

  • To manage the work programme of the Technical Department and maintain design standards to ensure the objectives contained within the Region’s budgets/forecasts are met in a cost-effective manner.
  • To ensure quality of design for the Company’s products and to always ensure adherence to the Technical Department’s Best Practice Procedures and the Company’s Health & Safety Policy.

Head of Technical - The Successful Applicant:

  • At least 5 years’ experience working for a national or regional house builder in a Technical Managerial position.
  • Extensive experience in a management role within a Technical function in the house building sector and a strong engineering background.
  • Experience as a Technical Director, Head of Technical, Senior Technical Manager, Design Director or Senior Design Manager, working for a national residential housebuilder.
  • Qualified to degree or HNC in Construction, Engineering, Town Planning or Urban Design, RICS or RIBA qualified or NVQ Level 5 in a relevant subject.
  • In-depth knowledge of CAD and Architectural desktop.
  • Excellent communicator, with high detail orientation and the ability to prioritise tasks to meet changing business needs.
  • Extensive experience of working within established development methodologies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the major functions within the remit of Technical Services and how they impact on site acquisition and development.
  • A motivational team-leader focused on managing, coaching and developing the Technical team to achieve their full potential.
  • Experience of people management and project leading.
  • Proven track record of managing a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Able to influence and persuade others to their point of view.
  • Capable of implementing change and of using their initiative.
  • Resilient, positive, confident and assertive but diplomatic.
  • Accurate with an eye for detail.
  • Understanding of planning application and legislation.
