I’m currently supporting a leading engineering organisation looking to appoint a Technical Director – Ports & Maritime Engineering to join its UK team.
We’re working with a major engineering organisation looking to strengthen its UK maritime capability with the appointment of a Technical Director. It’s a senior position for someone who has built their career around ports, marine structures and heavy civil infrastructure, and now wants broader influence across major UK programmes.
The role would suit an established engineering leader who combines a strong civil/structural engineering background with significant experience across ports, maritime or heavy infrastructure and is comfortable operating as a technical authority on large, multidisciplinary programmes.
The Opportunity
You’ll provide strategic and technical leadership across projects spanning civil, structural, geotechnical, seismic and maritime engineering, working alongside multidisciplinary teams from early concept and feasibility through detailed design and construction support.
Alongside project delivery, you’ll have the opportunity to influence the wider development of the Ports & Maritime capability, helping to shape engineering strategy, technical governance and best practice across the organisation.
You’ll also work closely with clients and senior stakeholders, acting as a trusted technical advisor on complex engineering decisions and helping teams develop practical, safe and buildable solutions.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership across complex ports, maritime and heavy civil engineering projects.
- Lead and guide civil and structural engineering activities across major programmes.
- Support projects from concept and feasibility through detailed design and construction.
- Provide technical governance, assurance and oversight of engineering deliverables.
- Advise clients and senior stakeholders on complex technical challenges and engineering decisions.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering inputs across structural, civil, geotechnical and related disciplines.
- Support delivery against scope, programme, budget, quality and risk.
- Drive technical excellence, innovation and continuous improvement across projects.
- Mentor engineers and emerging technical leaders, helping develop capability across the wider team.
- Contribute to the continued growth and development of the organisation's Ports & Maritime engineering capability.
What We're Looking For
- Chartered Engineer – ICE or IStructE
- Extensive civil and structural engineering experience at a senior technical leadership level
- Strong background within ports, maritime, marine infrastructure or related heavy civil engineering
- Experience delivering complex, high-value and technically challenging engineering programmes
- Strong knowledge of British Standards and Eurocodes
- Experience providing technical leadership, governance and assurance across multidisciplinary projects
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of the wider programme environment
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including experience working with senior clients
- Strong commitment to engineering quality, safety and practical, buildable solutions.

Desirable Experience
- Knowledge of maritime engineering guidance including PIANC and OCIMF
- Understanding of structural dynamics within marine or complex infrastructure environments
- Experience with advanced structural analysis tools such as STAAD.Pro or SAP2000
- Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and tools such as WALLAP or PLAXIS
- Experience leading digital engineering or Information Management strategies
- Knowledge of NEC3/NEC4 ECC contracts
- Previous experience supporting Defence or other highly regulated infrastructure programmes
