Role Description

The Technical Director Structural Engineering is a full-time, on-site role based in The Central Belt of Scotland. Other Arthian Offices will be considered. This position leads structural engineering projects from concept through delivery, providing technical oversight, design review, and engineering governance across a range of structures and built environment assignments. The role involves managing and mentoring structural engineering teams, coordinating multidisciplinary inputs, and ensuring designs meet safety, regulatory, sustainability, and performance standards, as well as hitting quality cost and time. The Technical Director will contribute to project planning, resource allocation, and risk management, while engaging with clients to define requirements, present solutions, and maintain strong relationships. Day-to-day responsibilities also include driving innovation in structural methods and tools, supporting business development activities, and ensuring consistent quality across all deliverables.

About the Role

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working on and managing the technical delivery of buildings and engineering projects from concept to detailed design.
  • Providing technical leadership on a variety of projects including structural design and assessment projects.
  • Confident in leading technically complex structural projects.
  • Taking a lead role in the development and growth of a specialist team. This will include recruitment, mentoring, development and training of staff.
  • Having excellent communication skills liaising with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Managing projects in line with quality, budgets and resources.
  • Playing a key role in design risk management and mitigation.
  • Supporting the development of project proposals and tender submissions.
  • Working with Directors, Business Development and Marketing teams to develop business opportunities with new and existing clients.
  • Meeting clients to define scopes of work and develop proposals.

About You

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A technical expert in structural design for buildings, civil structures and industrial assets.
  • Significant experience in an engineering consultancy, with particular expertise in structural design, refurbishment & assessment.
  • Ability to demonstrate technical excellence in structural design, for a variety of structures including buildings and other industrial structures.
  • Temporary works design is not essential but desirable.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant industry standards and guidance relating to design, assessment and refurbishment of buildings.
  • Ability to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of determining loading and methods of structural analysis.
  • Expertise in the design / assessment of reinforced concrete, steel, and other materials.
  • Proficiency in specialist engineering software for analysis and structural design.
  • Experience in leading and developing technical resources in the delivery of structural design.
  • Highly experienced in writing clear and precise technical reports and comfortable presenting findings/recommendations.
  • Experience of line-management and staff mentoring is required.
  • Ability to work to tight timescales and manage multiple projects at once.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Excellent verbal communication.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Full UK driving licence and the ability to attend client sites, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • You will hold a BEng, MEng or MSc qualified in Civil / Structural Engineering.
  • You will be chartered with IStructE or ICE.

  • The role may require travel (including occasional overnight stays) across the UK and overseas, depending on project requirements.
  • A full clean driving licence is desirable.
