Technical Director/Head of R&D – Electronics
We’re supporting an established international electronics business looking to appoint a Technical Director / Head of R&D to lead a key part of its product development organisation.
This is a senior leadership position for someone who has built their career in analog electronics and complex electronic product development, before progressing into engineering and R&D leadership.
The opportunity offers a strong balance between technical leadership, people management and strategic influence. While you’ll lead an established engineering function, this isn’t a role for someone who wants to move completely away from the technology. You’ll still need the technical depth and credibility to challenge engineering decisions, guide development teams and contribute to future product and technology direction.
The Role
You’ll take responsibility for the direction and performance of a multidisciplinary R&D function developing complex electronic products for demanding applications.
Working with engineering, product and senior leadership teams, you’ll help shape how products are developed, improve engineering processes and ensure the R&D organisation has the capability needed to support future growth.
Your Responsibilities
- Providing technical leadership across analog electronics and electronic product development
- Leading and developing a multidisciplinary engineering team
- Guiding complex design decisions and providing senior-level technical oversight
- Driving engineering excellence across design, development, validation and product performance
- Helping shape future technology roadmaps and product architecture
- Improving and standardising engineering processes, tools and development practices
- Supporting the development of new and customised electronic products
- Building capability within the engineering organisation through mentoring, recruitment and team development
- Working closely with other technical and commercial functions to ensure engineering priorities support wider business objectives
- Contributing to decisions around investment, resources, priorities and future R&D strategy
- Balancing technical performance, quality, cost and time-to-market

What We're Looking For
The key requirement is a strong technical foundation in analog electronics combined with proven engineering leadership experience.
Ideally, you will have:
- A strong background in analog electronic design and development
- Deep understanding of analog circuits and system-level electronic design
- A genuinely hands-on electronics engineering background earlier in your career
- Experience taking complex electronic products through the development lifecycle
- Several years of engineering or R&D leadership experience
- Experience managing and developing teams of engineers
- The technical credibility to challenge designs and contribute to complex engineering discussions
- Experience improving engineering processes and development practices
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams
- Experience contributing to senior-level technical or strategic decision-making
- An understanding of the commercial considerations behind product development, including cost, investment and resource allocation

Particularly Relevant Experience
A background in power electronics or switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) would be highly relevant, although we’re also interested in strong analog electronics leaders from adjacent product areas.
Additional experience could include:
- AC/DC or DC/DC power conversion
- SMPS design and development
- Signal conditioning
- Sensor electronics
- EMI / EMC
- Magnetics
- Thermal management
- Reliability engineering
- Cost engineering
- High-reliability or safety-critical electronic products
