Company Description

We specialise in the design and manufacture of lead products, drawing on over 200 years of experience to deliver high-quality, tailored solutions to support multiple industries including nuclear, medical, defence and construction. All state-of-the-art design, manufacturing and assembly work is carried out at our Chester facility, where multidisciplinary teams collaborate closely to solve challenging engineering problems.

Role Description

The Technical Engineering Manager is a full-time, on-site role based at our Chester facility. The Technical Engineering Manager leads and mentors a multidisciplinary engineering team, allocates resources, and ensures effective communication among stakeholders, including production, quality, and commercial teams. The Technical Engineering Manager is responsible for the end-to-end technical delivery within Calder Industrial Materials across both our building and engineering products divisions. Covering product design, CNC programming, and Manufacturing Engineering, the Technical Engineering Manager will oversee a small team with a big scope.

Calder Industrial Materials is going through a period of growth and therefore the development of our overall Technical and Production strategy to achieve our industrial vision will be paramount. This role will also play a key role in the development and deployment of our first ERP system and shaping our future ways of working.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Manage and lead a team of design, CNC programming, and Manufacturing engineers to support the introduction of new products and processes as well as maintain and improve our legacy products and processes.
  • Work closely with our HSE Manager to ensure that all process design is inherently safe and considers human factors within its design.
  • Ultimate ownership and final decision-making on all production processes within the business which offers a huge variety of processes and machines from simple to complex (e.g., casting, rolling mills, extrusions, machine shop, fabrications).
  • Work closely with the commercial teams to understand our volume demand requirements for the site and ensure that the facility and team are able to meet the demand requirements. This includes ownership of factory layout, processes, and CAPEX plan to support.
  • Drive our NPI process and transition commercial projects from contract award to production readiness, working closely with our supply chain team to enable production.
  • Develop the medium and long-term industrial strategy alongside your colleagues to plan our enablement and ramp-up plans where necessary.
  • Ensure that the Technical Engineering team are trained to the correct standards in advance of when required. Understanding competency gaps and supporting employee development will be needed.
  • Work closely with the Maintenance, Quality, and Production Teams as a key part of the Operations department, developing operations budgets and cross-functional improvement initiatives.
  • Lead on cost by actively pursuing cost reduction or cost avoidance activity, often requiring multi-stakeholder support and buy-in.
  • Develop strategy to support future industrial system needs and requirements, ensuring to develop digital technologies and industry 4.0/5.0 as opportunities dictate.
  • Drive innovation and RnD within Calder Industrial Materials, demonstrating the ability to highlight opportunities and take concepts through to steady-state usage.
  • Support bid and estimate creation and liaise with customers and external bodies to advise on technical discussions or questions as required.
  • Define and own engineering standards, technical governance, and change control processes.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
