Role Description:
The Technical Instructor Marine Electrics and Simulation is a full-time, on-site role based in Southampton. This position involves delivering technical instruction and practical training in marine electrical systems and simulation technologies to learners at various levels. The instructor will prepare and update training materials, set up and operate simulation equipment, and provide hands-on demonstrations and supervised practice in workshops and laboratories. Day-to-day tasks include planning and delivering training sessions, assessing learner progress, ensuring safe use of equipment, and supporting curriculum development in collaboration with academic and technical staff. The role also includes providing guidance to learners on industry standards, emerging technologies, and best practice in marine electrics and simulation.

Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate techniques, instruct and assess students in the operation of specialist facilities and supervise students in practical activities to support an excellent student experience.
- Support academic staff in the use of equipment and specialist facilities associated with the delivery of teaching or research activities.
- Prepare equipment and facilities in advance of practical teaching sessions, and close-down/store equipment after use.
- Coordinate and implement University health and safety policy.
- Write reports, technical specifications, COSHH assessments and update risk assessments as required.
- Install, maintain and repair specialist facilities and equipment where possible or escalating a repair.
- Liaise with manufacturers and suppliers as necessary to ensure effective installation, operation and servicing of equipment.
- Work on own initiative and as part of a team, methodically working through technical issues and equipment maintenance.
- Assist in the preparing and maintaining a rolling plan for investment in and maintenance of the technical facilities.
- Assist in the preparation of capital bids for specialist equipment where required.
- Communicate effectively verbally and be able to negotiate with suppliers.
- Contribute to the team objectives.
- Engage with external bodies, such as local schools and community groups to demonstrate or use specialist facilities.
- Undertake any other duties that might be reasonably required.

Other
- Occasional evening and weekend working (advised in advance wherever possible).
- Ensuring accurate input of data into university systems including the appropriate handling of data in accordance with established University policies and procedures to safeguard the integrity of data.
Qualifications
- Required: Merchant vessel ETO Certificate of Competency; or EOOW (or higher) CoC with High Voltage endorsements; or an approved electrical engineering qualification with relevant industrial experience.
- Desirable: Level 3 qualification in assessing vocational achievement.
- Desirable: IOSH Working Safely or other Health and Safety relevant qualification.
- Desirable: First Aid at Work
- Desirable: LOLER Competent Person
Knowledge
- Good working knowledge of relevant subject discipline, software and equipment.
- Good knowledge of basic teaching and instruction techniques.
- Good understanding of operating in a Higher Education environment and the UK Higher Education system.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation affecting the technical team, the areas being supervised and the student activities.
Experience
- Experience of technical training/instruction to students.
- Relevant industry experience in a practical area related to the subject discipline.
- Experience of a range of relevant techniques and equipment.
- Experience of a range of relevant software packages.
Skills
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to develop solutions to technical and other problems.
