Technical Lead Java – Contract
Location: London, UK (Hybrid – 2 days per week onsite mandatory)
Contract Type: Contract
Rate: Up to £550 per day (Inside IR35)
Duration: 12 months
Client: FCA Regulated Financial Services Organisation
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Technical Lead Java to join a major FCA-regulated financial services client delivering complex, high-scale digital transformation initiatives.
This is an exciting opportunity for a hands-on technical leader with strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, Event-Driven Architecture, and cloud-native engineering to lead the design and delivery of secure, resilient, and scalable enterprise platforms.
You will work closely with engineering teams, architects, product owners, and business stakeholders to drive technical excellence, modernise platforms, and deliver solutions aligned with regulatory, security, and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical design and development activities across Agile engineering teams.
- Drive solution design, architectural decisions, and engineering best practices.
- Design and develop enterprise-grade applications using Java and Spring Boot.
- Build scalable, secure, and highly available microservices-based solutions.
- Design and implement event-driven architectures using messaging and integration platforms.
- Develop asynchronous processing solutions for high-volume transaction environments.
- Provide technical leadership through code reviews, mentoring, and coaching of engineers.
- Support architecture governance, technical reviews, and design assurance activities.
- Collaborate with architects, DevOps teams, and stakeholders to deliver cloud-ready solutions.
- Promote engineering quality through automation, testing, CI/CD practices, and continuous improvement.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot development.
- Proven experience designing and delivering microservices architectures.
- Strong understanding of Event-Driven Architecture and messaging patterns.
- Experience building secure, scalable, and highly available enterprise applications.
- Strong experience with REST API design and integration patterns.
- Experience with distributed systems and cloud-native development.
- Experience leading Agile delivery teams and technical initiatives.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and technical governance.
- Experience mentoring developers and driving engineering standards.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with strong stakeholder communication abilities.

- Spring Cloud ecosystem.
- Azure cloud services and integration patterns.
- Azure Service Bus / Azure Event Hub.
- NoSQL and document database technologies.
- Domain-Driven Design (DDD).
- DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and automation practices.
- Kubernetes and containerised application delivery.
- Experience working within regulated financial services environments.
