Job Summary

Contract type: Permanent Location: Alderley Park Working style: Hybrid 50% home/office based

We’re looking for a hands on Technical Lead to provide technical leadership, guidance and operational oversight to our Data Automation team. You’ll combine strong engineering capability with leadership experience, remaining actively involved in the design, development and support of solutions while helping others deliver effectively.

About the Role

  • Provide technical leadership, coaching and mentoring to the Data Automation team, creating a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Take a hands-on role in the design, development, review and delivery of scalable, reliable and secure data engineering and automation solutions.
  • Coordinate data engineering deliverables, set clear goals and timelines, and ensure high-quality outcomes are delivered on time.
  • Develop and communicate a clear technical direction for data engineering, aligned with Royal London’s data strategy and organisational goals.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce modern technologies, best practices and innovative approaches that improve efficiency and reduce manual processing.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and the wider Royal London data community to ensure data infrastructure and processing systems meet business needs.
  • Lead, motivate and develop a team of up to seven colleagues, while effectively managing contingent resource where required.

About You

  • Deep technical knowledge of data engineering, including experience designing and implementing large-scale data processing systems.
  • Proven experience operating as a hands-on technical lead, combining team leadership with the ability to design, build, review and troubleshoot complex technical solutions.
  • Recent hands-on experience developing production data solutions using Python, SQL, Databricks and cloud-based data services.
  • A strong understanding of data architecture, security, privacy and the design of scalable and reliable solutions.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with an automation mindset and the ability to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Strong communication, collaboration and people leadership skills, with the ability to influence and work effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
