Tech Lead Contractor | London Hybrid - Day Rate £550-£575 p/d (Outside IR35) - 6 Months Initial (Extension Possible)
I’m currently recruiting for an experienced hands-on Tech Lead to join a high-performing engineering team working on complex, business-critical software.
This is a technical leadership role rather than a people-management position, with approximately 80% of the role focused on hands-on engineering - designing, coding, reviewing, testing and improving production services.
You’ll take technical ownership across the software delivery lifecycle, working closely with engineers, product, architecture, delivery, QA, DevOps, security and other technical stakeholders.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Taking technical ownership of key services, features and delivery outcomes
- Spending the majority of your time coding, reviewing and improving production software
- Providing technical direction and making pragmatic architecture and design decisions
- Working with cross-functional teams to clarify requirements, scope work and identify technical risks
- Supporting and mentoring engineers through pairing, design discussions and code reviews
- Improving standards around testing, observability, performance, scalability and resilience
- Identifying technical debt, reliability risks and performance bottlenecks
- Contributing to sprint planning, estimation and delivery
- Supporting production incidents, root-cause analysis and service improvements
- Helping drive good engineering practices across CI/CD, monitoring, deployment and change management
- Taking ownership of complex problems and driving them through to completion with limited guidance

What I’m looking for
- Strong hands-on Golang and/or Python experience
- Proven experience building and operating production-grade backend services
- Previous experience providing technical leadership within engineering teams
- Strong understanding of microservices, APIs, distributed systems and event-driven architectures
- Experience working with containerised/cloud-native environments
- Strong knowledge of software design, testing, clean code, maintainability and secure engineering practices
- Experience assessing systems for scalability, latency, resilience, performance and data integrity
- Comfortable improving existing services and making pragmatic decisions within mature codebases
- Strong code review and technical communication skills
- Comfortable working across Agile/Scrum environments
- Able to influence technical decisions without relying on formal management authority
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable operating independently in an environment with ambiguity and competing priorities

Particularly valuable
Experience with technologies such as:
- Kafka
- Kubernetes
- Redis
- Oracle
- PostgreSQL
- CI/CD
- Observability
- Cloud Platforms
Background in areas such as financial services, payments, fraud, AML, machine learning or data-intensive systems would be advantageous, but isn’t essential.
