We are seeking an experienced Technical Lead to lead and develop a high-performing Software Engineering team. Reporting to and working closely with the Engineering Manager, you will translate business and technology priorities into effective technology strategies and solutions while ensuring day-to-day engineering and operational support arrangements are in place. This role combines people leadership, hands-on technical expertise and delivery responsibility, ensuring our software solutions are secure, scalable, resilient and aligned to business priorities.

Key Responsibilities
You will work closely with the Engineering Manager across people leadership, team capability, roadmap planning, delivery, stakeholder engagement, operational effectiveness, risk and governance.
Leadership & Team Management
- Line manage and mentor a team of Software Engineers, supporting performance, progression and technical capability development.
- Support the Engineering Manager in setting clear direction for the team, aligning priorities and developing its engineering capability.
- Foster a strong engineering culture focused on quality, collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Provide technical guidance, coaching and oversight across multiple initiatives, including through design discussions and code reviews.
- Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, vendors and partners, communicating effectively with technical and non-technical audiences to align technology and business needs and support value delivery.
Technical & Delivery Ownership
- Contribute to shaping the engineering roadmap and take delegated ownership of delivering agreed roadmap outcomes to the required quality and timescales.
- Lead the technical aspects of software delivery from requirements analysis and estimation through design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance.
- Work with cross-functional delivery teams to define scope, timelines and milestones, plan technical delivery and manage dependencies and risks.
- Articulate the benefits, limitations and technical implications of proposed solutions to support informed decision-making.
- Represent Software Engineering in relevant cross-functional change, migration and transformation initiatives, contributing to their scoping, planning and delivery.
Software Engineering
- Lead the design and implementation of application architectures that are secure, scalable, maintainable, performant, resilient, cost-effective and operationally supportable.
- Act as the technical design authority for assigned software solutions, ensuring alignment with engineering standards, architectural principles and best practices.
- Design, code, test and deploy high-quality software, remaining hands-on where required for complex or high-impact work.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, practices, frameworks and tools, recommending adoption where they offer clear business or engineering value.
- Support the definition and implementation of engineering best practices, including coding standards, peer review, automated testing, development methodologies and CI/CD.
- Ensure solutions integrate effectively with APIs, CRM, SaaS products and other third-party systems.
- Enable a continuous service improvement culture, ensuring software issues are resolved, underlying causes are addressed and opportunities to improve quality, reliability and supportability are implemented.

Technology Governance and Assurance
- Implement and uphold relevant policies, standards and procedures within the team and assigned software solutions to protect the security, compliance and integrity of technology systems and data.
- Ensure technical decisions, software risks and associated controls are documented and progressed through the appropriate governance processes.
- Oversee the creation and maintenance of technical documentation, including design specifications, architectural diagrams, implementation guidance, support guides and development standards, to support compliance and effective knowledge transfer.
- Create or contribute to technical delivery, risk and control reporting as needed to provide appropriate governance and oversight.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience leading, line managing or mentoring Software Engineers in a delivery-focused environment.
- Strong hands-on software development experience, particularly with Node.js and Java, and experience building user interfaces with React.
- Good practical coverage across a broad technology landscape, including public cloud platforms such as AWS and GCP; MuleSoft and API integration; Git and GitHub; Terraform; Docker and Kubernetes; and PostgreSQL.
- Experience designing and delivering secure, scalable, resilient and maintainable applications and APIs.
- Experience working across the full Software Development Lifecycle, from discovery, requirements and estimation through design, development, testing, change and release management, deployment, monitoring and production support.
- Strong understanding of engineering practices including source control, code review, automated testing, CI/CD and secure software development.
- Experience contributing to technical roadmaps and delivering against strategic objectives, including managing and influencing stakeholders at different levels.
- Experience integrating software with internal platforms, CRM, SaaS products and other third-party systems.
- Experience with Agile delivery methodologies, cross-functional teams and tools such as Jira for planning, tracking and managing delivery.
- Ability to prioritise work, manage multiple initiatives and meet commitments.
- Strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to technical challenges.
Desirable Experience & Attributes
- Deep expertise in one or more of the technologies used by the team.
- Experience working in Financial Services or another regulated environment.
- Experience working in a large-scale enterprise environment.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity, technology risk management and governance processes.
- An inclusive and supportive leadership style, with the ability to coach, motivate and develop others.
- Confidence communicating complex technical concepts in clear business terms and influencing stakeholders at different levels.
- A pragmatic, delivery-focused approach, with the ability to balance strategic thinking, technical quality and business priorities.
