Job Title: Technical Manager - Substations
Reporting to:
BU General Manager / Regional Manager
Business Unit:
ASTI / Scotland Perimeter
Role purpose
To support the delivery of Substations projects working with the business units within the perimeter to support a full turnkey delivery or directly for a client on substation projects.
Responsibilities & Duties
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Input into all engineering activities at tender and delivery stages
- Identify temporary works and other engineering aspects and advise on the appropriate resources.
- Liaise with customers
- Provide point of reference contact for customers, business units & partners
- Support the implementation of health, safety, environment and quality requirements appropriate for each customer and contract
- Manage high level relationships with consulting engineers & in-house engineering teams including the effective implementation of design agreements and design management activity
- Ensure the most appropriate design resources for tender and delivery activities are engaged.
- Drive innovation culture, improvement activity, knowledge
- Ensure high level compliance with CDM regulations
- Lead and support teams to win work, including review and input into tenders, including attending interviews and briefing sessions, and making presentations to customers and other stakeholders
- Support bid managers & estimators to establish highest quality submissions
- Lead, where necessary and provide support to BUGM’s and projects managers for the effective mobilisation of new contracts including setting up of health and safety, quality, and environmental plans
- Identify and support the selection of sub contractors and suppliers.
- Responsible to support the coordination of technicians, coordination of workload, forward planning and training & development in conjunction with BUGM or OPS Managers.
- Carry out audits and produce reports as required
- Ensure that all compliance records including training & competence are maintained and updated
- Closely liaise with other business units for best practice and lessons learnt
- Lead, assist and support the substations team with compliance against all necessary asset owner requirements.
- Support the development and mentoring of our next generation of Substations project managers, engineers and technicians.
- Support the development of our substation institute training and development programme(s).

Qualifications and Training
- Educated to degree level or equivalent in relevant field
- Chartered Engineer or similar and participation in affiliated bodies for example the IET, Institution of Civil and/or Electrical Engineers.
- Previous senior level involvement in the provision of design management services for engineering design and construction in the Energy Transmission Sector
- Significant senior level involvement in large project tender teams including price and quality adjudicated bids
- An understanding of commercial aspects including typical terms and conditions and procurement models
- Experienced in the management, surveillance and audit of assurance regimes
- Experience of managing design process in tender or contract environment
- Experience with working in joint ventures and alliances or other collaborative working

Person Specification
- Self-driven, results orientated with a positive outlook
- Good management skills, with the ability to motivate employees to achieve high standard of compliance
- Excellent organizational, planning and time management skills; able to manage projects simultaneously without compromising on standards and quality
- Sound knowledge of the Energy Transmission Industry
- Ability to ensure standards and specifications are met
- Ability to work with senior management to set project and operational targets
- Excellent negotiation and diplomacy skills with the ability to make a sound business case to senior stakeholders
