Environmental Protection Technical Officer

Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council,

We are seeking a proactive and motivated Environmental Protection Technical Officer to deliver a comprehensive, customer-focused Environmental Protection service.

If you have a real passion for Environmental Health and thrive on helping to improve the lives of the residents of Nuneaton and Bedworth, this role is for you. You will develop and apply specialist expertise in environmental protection while handling a diverse workload. This post offers plentiful opportunities to expand your knowledge across all areas of pollution control work. To excel, you must bring self-motivation, competent communication skills, and the capability to take responsibility for your individual work targets.

Main Duties

This role will include:

  • Nuisance Investigations: Investigate commercial and domestic statutory nuisance, and waste complaints, with a primary focus on noise complaints.
  • Inspections & Monitoring: Carry out environmental protection inspections, audits, sampling, and surveillance, including evaluating noise evidence.
  • Enforcement Action: Initiate proportionate enforcement duties, including serving Abatement Notices and Community Protection Notices, preparing prosecution files, and acting as the Council’s witness in court or at Tribunals.
  • Working effectively with external organisations, local communities/stakeholders, and multi-agency forums.

We are looking for someone with excellent customer care skills, who can prioritise and organise their own workload, enjoys a challenge, and is confident in challenging situations.

Experience Required

Experience of working in an enforcement role, in activities such as regulatory inspections/audits, investigations, response to complaints or requests for advice.

Core Attributes

We are looking for an assertive, logical thinker with great judgement who can manage a varied workload under pressure. To be successful, you must demonstrate:

  • A genuine commitment to protecting public health, strong investigative skills, and a proactive approach to learning and continuous improvement.
  • Proven experience in a regulatory role (preferably within a local authority or public service) and direct experience communicating with people from a range of backgrounds.
  • Exceptional verbal and written English, with the ability to interpret legislation and assertively communicate regulatory requirements while remaining supportive.
  • The confidence to work independently, make timely, informed decisions, and collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • A valid driving licence and access to your own transport for work-related travel. You must also be flexible to work occasionally unsocial hours.
