About The Role

We're looking for a highly creative, technically skilled and safety-conscious Technical Perfumer & Fragrance Innovation Lead to shape the future of scent at Tropic.

This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of fragrance across a fast-growing, purpose-led beauty brand with its own laboratories, chemists and UK manufacturing facility. You’ll define how Tropic products smell, how our fragrances are created, how we communicate the sensorial benefits of scent and how we build our fragrance development capability in-house.

Fragrance is one of the most powerful parts of the product experience. It can transform a routine, create memory and make a product truly loved. At Tropic, we want to create beautiful, safe and consciously formulated fragrances that enhance our products without compromising our values.

You’ll work across skincare, body care, hair care, wellbeing and fine fragrance, refining existing product scents, developing new directions and creating a clean fine fragrance range with the quality, complexity and emotional pull of prestige perfumery.

This is a hands-on technical role for an experienced perfumer who combines a highly developed creative nose with deep scientific and formulation expertise. You’ll personally create fragrance compounds from individual raw materials, taking them from initial concept through technical validation, regulatory compliance and manufacturing scale-up. Crucially, you’ll have the expertise to independently identify and resolve challenges around stability, compatibility, solubility, oxidation and performance within real product bases.

Key Responsibilities

Fragrance Creation & Technical Development

  • Personally create and develop fragrance compounds from individual natural and synthetic aroma raw materials.
  • Formulate, compound, evaluate and optimise fragrances at the bench, taking concepts from initial composition through to technically validated formulations.
  • Apply deep knowledge of fragrance raw materials, including their functionality, interactions, performance characteristics, safety considerations and formulation limitations.
  • Evaluate fragrance compatibility, stability and performance within different product bases and delivery formats.
  • Design, lead and interpret stability and compatibility testing, identifying and resolving technical challenges throughout development.
  • Apply appropriate analytical methods to fragrance development, quality assessment and troubleshooting, translating findings into formulation decisions.
  • Maintain accurate formulation records, technical documentation, specifications and development protocols.

Fragrance & Product Scent Ownership

  • Take ownership of Tropic’s fragrance world, building a clear and cohesive fragrance architecture and defining our signature scent style across categories.
  • Review, refine and optimise the scent profiles and technical performance of existing Tropic products.
  • Create new fragrance directions for future launches, limited editions, seasonal collections and brand moments.
  • Develop fragrance briefs, olfactive concepts and scent stories aligned with Tropic’s values and positioning.
  • Work closely with Product Development, R&D, Regulatory, Brand, Marketing and Manufacturing to ensure each fragrance enhances the product experience and meets technical requirements.

Fine Fragrance Innovation

  • Lead the creation and technical development of Tropic’s future clean fine fragrance range, delivering the sophistication, longevity and emotional depth of prestige perfumery.
  • Explore natural-origin materials, essential oils, isolates and responsibly sourced aroma compounds, balancing creative intent with safety, stability and performance.
  • Build compelling fragrance stories around mood, memory, nature, wellbeing, identity and ritual.
  • Lead testing, refinement and evaluation across different fragrance formats and applications.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Safety, Regulatory & Responsible Fragrance

  • Own the technical and regulatory integrity of fragrance formulations, applying IFRA Standards, fragrance-allergen requirements, sensitisation considerations, ingredient restrictions and relevant UK and EU cosmetic requirements.
  • Assess formulas throughout development and personally reformulate where safety, regulatory or product-performance requirements are not met.
  • Evaluate natural fragrance materials with scientific and regulatory awareness, recognising that natural does not automatically mean risk-free.
  • Stay close to developments in fragrance safety, allergen labelling, green chemistry and sustainable fragrance materials, using this knowledge to inform Tropic’s approach.

In-house fragrance development and manufacturing

  • Build Tropic’s internal capability to create, compound and manufacture fragrances in-house, covering raw-material selection, formulation, compounding, dilution, storage, quality control and scale-up.
  • Establish robust internal systems for raw-material evaluation, formulation trials, stability and compatibility testing, batch consistency and technical documentation.
  • Define the equipment, laboratory processes, workflows, quality standards and supplier requirements needed for safe and effective in-house fragrance creation.
  • Lead the progression of fragrance formulations from laboratory development through scale-up and manufacture, troubleshooting technical challenges and ensuring fragrances remain stable, consistent and compliant.
  • Partner with external fragrance houses, analytical laboratories and suppliers where appropriate, while retaining technical ownership and continuing to build Tropic’s internal expertise.

Aromatherapy, wellbeing and education

  • Bring an informed perspective on aromatherapy, essential oils and the emotional impact of scent, helping explore how fragrance can support mood, ritual and wellbeing.
  • Create scent experiences that feel beautiful, purposeful and emotionally resonant while remaining technically robust and responsibly formulated.
  • Help define and communicate Tropic’s fragrance philosophy, including what we use, what we avoid and why.
  • Contribute to fragrance education for consumers, Ambassadors and internal teams, covering scent families, notes, natural materials, aromatherapy principles and product experience.
  • Support launch content, training materials and behind-the-scenes storytelling to make perfumery feel accessible and exciting.

What We’re Looking For

You’ll be an experienced, hands-on technical perfumer with demonstrable experience personally creating and compounding fragrances from individual aroma raw materials. You’ll combine a highly developed creative nose with deep technical expertise and the ability to independently take fragrance from creative concept through technical development and into manufacture.

You may have developed your expertise within a fragrance house, specialist perfumery laboratory, cosmetic R&D environment or beauty manufacturer. Most importantly, you must have personally carried out the technical development of fragrance compounds rather than solely briefing, evaluating or project-managing work completed by fragrance houses or supporting scientists.

  • Formal training or qualifications in perfumery, fragrance chemistry, fragrance creation, cosmetic science or a closely related discipline.
  • Significant hands-on experience formulating and compounding fragrances from individual natural and synthetic aroma raw materials.
  • Deep knowledge of fragrance formulation, including olfactive structure, ingredient functionality, material interactions and fragrance evaluation.
  • Experience developing fragrances for both fine fragrance and cosmetic applications.
  • Proven experience investigating and resolving fragrance stability and product-base compatibility challenges.
  • Practical knowledge of analytical methods used in fragrance development and troubleshooting, with the ability to interpret data and translate findings into formulation decisions.
  • Strong working knowledge of IFRA Standards, fragrance allergens, sensitisation risk, ingredient restrictions and relevant UK and EU cosmetic requirements.
  • Experience progressing fragrance compounds from initial formulation through technical validation, scale-up and manufacture, supported by robust testing, documentation and quality-control processes.
  • Excellent sensory evaluation skills, creative and commercial judgement, and the ability to collaborate across technical and commercial teams while retaining ownership of fragrance development.
