Technical Sales Engineer – Process Control & Measurement Instrumentation
UK-wide | Field-based | Company car
Berthold Technologies UK is looking for a proactive, commercially driven Technical Sales Engineer to grow our Process Control business across the UK. This is an active, outward-facing sales role for someone who enjoys identifying new opportunities, opening doors and developing customer relationships from first contact through to order.
Berthold is a global specialist in radiometric, nucleonic and other non-contact process measurement technologies. Our instruments are used to measure level, interface, density, concentration, bulk flow and moisture, particularly in demanding applications where conventional instrumentation may be unreliable, difficult to maintain or unsuitable.
The role covers a broad range of UK process industries, including:
- Oil and gas production
- Refining
- Chemical and petrochemical
- Metals and steel
- Mining and mineral processing
- Power generation
- Pulp and paper
- Cement, concrete, glass and other building materials
- Food and beverage
- Sugar production
- Water and wastewater treatment
- Waste management and recycling
You will develop opportunities across all relevant UK markets, with a particular focus on expanding Berthold’s presence within the oil and gas, refining, chemical and petrochemical sectors.
The role
Working from home and travelling throughout the UK, you will be responsible for actively developing the market, generating new business and converting technical opportunities into orders. You will be expected to build your own pipeline through targeted prospecting, customer visits, industry networking, referrals, existing market contacts and close engagement with engineering contractors, system integrators and end users.
This is not a passive account-management role. You will need to be comfortable approaching new customers, creating opportunities where none currently exist and maintaining momentum throughout long and technically complex sales cycles.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing opportunities for radiometric and nucleonic measurement systems
- Understanding customer applications involving sealed radioactive sources, detectors and measurement electronics
- Identifying applications where non-contact radiometric measurement provides advantages over conventional instrumentation
- Proactively identifying and pursuing new business opportunities across the UK
- Developing and executing a structured territory and account-development plan
- Building relationships with new customers, decision-makers and technical influencers
- Generating leads through direct prospecting, networking, market research and industry events
- Arranging and conducting customer meetings and site visits
- Identifying process measurement challenges and suitable Berthold applications
- Developing opportunities for level, interface, density, concentration, bulk-flow and moisture measurement
- Managing opportunities from initial contact and technical evaluation through to quotation, negotiation and order
- Growing existing customer accounts by identifying new applications, upgrades and replacement opportunities
- Building relationships with engineering contractors, EPCs, system integrators and end users
- Delivering technical presentations, application discussions and product demonstrations
- Preparing technically accurate quotations and commercial proposals
- Following up proposals consistently and driving opportunities towards a decision
- Maintaining a strong, accurate and actively managed sales pipeline
- Providing reliable forecasts and reporting on sales activity, opportunities and market development
- Working closely with Berthold’s UK team and product specialists in Germany
- Representing Berthold at exhibitions, seminars, technical events and customer meetings
- Monitoring competitors, market developments and emerging projects

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
