Sales Manager / Technical Sales Manager
My client is a leading supplier of Agricultural Irrigation and Dirty Water Dispersal Equipment and they are seeking an experienced and commercially driven Sales Manager / Technical Sales Manager to join an established UK manufacturer operating within the mechanised irrigation and water management sector.
This is a key role within the business, combining business development, technical sales, system design, customer relationship management and field-based support.
Our ideal candidate will have a full background within the Agricultural Sales and be able to demonstrate confidence in building relationships in this Sector.
You will take ownership of customer opportunities from initial enquiry through to specification, quotation, order, delivery and commissioning. The successful candidate will be comfortable operating both commercially and technically, with the ability to understand a customer's requirements, design an appropriate solution and confidently support that solution through to successful operation.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced technical sales professional looking for a role with genuine autonomy, customer contact and the opportunity to make a significant contribution to business growth.
Key Responsibilities
Sales & Business Development
- Take ownership of sales performance, revenue growth and agreed sales targets.
- Identify, develop and convert new business opportunities across the UK and, where appropriate, European markets.
- Develop key accounts, tenders, partnerships and dealer/distributor opportunities.
- Build and manage a strong sales pipeline from initial enquiry through to order.
- Develop long-term relationships with customers across agriculture, commercial and specialist markets.
- Negotiate and close sales with a strong understanding of price, margin, cost, value and customer requirements.
- Provide regular sales forecasts, pipeline updates, performance reports and market intelligence to senior management.
Technical Sales & System Design
- Visit customer sites to understand their operational and technical requirements.
- Assess factors including water availability, flow, pressure, field layout, distances, topography, crop requirements and irrigation strategy.
- Specify complete irrigation solutions, including irrigation machines, hose reels, booms, pumps, hose diameters, nozzles, spacing and application rates.
- Apply a strong practical understanding of hydraulics, pumps, flow, pressure, hose sizing and water application rates.
- Ensure proposed solutions are technically sound, commercially viable and suitable for real-world operating conditions.
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of products, technology and developments within the irrigation and agricultural engineering sectors.

Commissioning & Field Support
- Attend customer sites to support installation, commissioning and handover of equipment.
- Ensure systems are correctly configured, calibrated and operating effectively.
- Troubleshoot technical and practical issues in the field.
- Work closely with internal engineering and production teams to resolve issues where required.
- Provide customer training and operational guidance.
- Gather customer and field feedback to support product development and continuous improvement.
Aftermarket & Customer Development
- Identify opportunities for spare parts, consumables, upgrades and system enhancements.
- Develop repeat business through strong customer relationships and ongoing account management.
- Identify opportunities to improve customer performance, water efficiency and system reliability.
- Support customer retention through proactive contact and technical support.
Internal Collaboration
- Work closely with engineering, production, purchasing, marketing, technical support and customer service teams.
- Ensure customer requirements are accurately translated into quotations, specifications and internal build information.
- Support a seamless customer journey from enquiry through to delivery, commissioning and ongoing support.
- Provide market feedback to assist with future product and service development.
About You
We are looking for an individual who combines commercial sales ability with strong technical understanding.
You will ideally have:
- At least 5 years' experience in sales, ideally within irrigation, agricultural engineering, water systems, pumps, machinery or a related technical sector.
- A proven track record of generating sales, winning new business and delivering against revenue targets.
- Experience specifying and delivering technical products or systems in real-world operating environments.
- A practical understanding of irrigation systems and their application across different soils, crops and operating conditions.
- Good knowledge of flow, pressure, hydraulics and pump selection.
- An understanding of hose sizing, nozzle selection, application rates and irrigation performance.
- Experience of installation, commissioning, field support or technical customer support would be highly advantageous.
- Strong commercial awareness, including pricing, margin and negotiation.
- Excellent communication, presentation and relationship-building skills.
- The ability to manage a sales pipeline and provide accurate forecasts and reporting.
- A practical, hands-on approach and the confidence to work independently with customers.
- A willingness to travel extensively throughout the UK, with European travel as required.
- Fluent English; an additional European language would be advantageous.
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Business, Agriculture, Engineering, Water Management or a related discipline would be beneficial, although relevant practical industry experience will be equally valued.
