Surface Preparation and Finishing Equipment
South of England | Remote Field-Based
Competitive salary + Bonus + Company Car
About the Company
Are you a capital equipment salesperson who likes a proper project to get your teeth into, a pipeline that is already moving, and the freedom to run your own territory? Surface Talent are recruiting an Area Sales Manager for SurfacePrep UK, the business behind Hodge Clemco, one of the most established names in British blasting and surface preparation. This is a replacement hire into a live territory. The enquiries are already coming in and there is a quote book to pick up, so you are inheriting momentum rather than starting from zero.
About the Role
You will own capital equipment sales across the South: blast cabinets, blast rooms and enclosures, recovery and recycling systems, and larger grouped blasting, painting and curing projects. Order values run from five to seven figures.
Responsibilities
- Working a steady flow of inbound enquiries and generating your own opportunities on top
- Visiting site, surveying and specifying what the customer needs (footprint, location, utilities, extraction)
- Managing long-cycle, high-value projects from enquiry through to order
- Building relationships with engineering, operations and procurement contacts across manufacturing sites
- Bringing customers into the Sheffield facility for trials and demonstrations
- Keeping the CRM and forecast honest
- Reporting directly to the Managing Director

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
You'll be home-based with no fixed office days. Expect three to four days a week in front of customers and one to two on admin, with overnights where a run of visits makes sense.
Required Skills
- You'll need to be someone with energy and personality, who brings an opinion to a meeting, and who is not looking for a comfortable seat.
- Proven record in capital equipment or engineered solution sales who is technically confident, commercially sharp and wants to be out in front of customers.
- Experience managing long sales cycles and high-value projects
- Enough technical aptitude to walk a factory floor and turn what you see into a specification
- Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills
- The ability to work independently across a large regional territory

Blasting or surface preparation experience is a bonus, not a requirement. If you've sold paint finishing lines, dust extraction, industrial washing systems, machine tools or similar engineered kit into manufacturing, you are exactly who we want to speak to. The blasting side can be taught; the sales instinct can't.
Pay range and compensation package
- Competitive basic salary
- Performance bonus built around growth and margin
- Company car
- Death in service and a full benefits package
- A growing, acquisitive group
