The role

Technical Support Engineer – Avionics

Heavy Maintenance is a critical operational area, delivering aircraft maintenance checks safely, efficiently and to schedule. Our Operations Support teams help keep the maintenance programme on track by ensuring production and planning teams have the technical support they need. As Technical Support Engineer – Avionics, you will provide practical, cost-effective solutions and specialist guidance to support production requirements and planning readiness at British Airways Engineering Wales.

What You’ll Do

As Technical Support Engineer – Avionics, you will:

  • Develop practical, cost-effective non-standard avionics repair designs and installation solutions that enable safe, timely aircraft delivery.
  • Prepare repair design documentation under Part 145 and Part 21 approvals, ensuring compliance with legislation, regulatory requirements and applicable airworthiness directives.
  • Investigate and resolve complex technical issues, providing clear guidance to Team Leaders and Engineers on avionics repair and maintenance matters.
  • Work with customers, aircraft manufacturers, OEMs, Part 21 approval holders and technical representatives to agree solutions and meet operational requirements.
  • Collaborate with OEMs to correct, improve and clarify aircraft and component maintenance documentation.
  • Lead independent investigations following the allocation Technical or Mandatory Occurrence Reports.
  • Research, design and support the approval of alternative tools and equipment.
  • Prepare and issue Technical News Circulars and coordinate the distribution of customer technical information.
  • Uphold high professional standards, champion continuous improvement and help colleagues develop through effective leadership, communication and coaching.
  • Deputise for the Production Support Manager – Planning and carry out other duties within your competence as required.

Your Experience

You will have at least five GCSEs, or equivalent qualifications, at grade C or above, including English and Mathematics, or be able to demonstrate relevant experience in an aircraft engineering environment. You will also hold an HNC, HND or degree in an engineering-related subject and have experience of avionics systems and repair design on relevant commercial aircraft types, such as Boeing aircraft. An aircraft engineering apprenticeship or engineering degree background, together with extensive knowledge of applicable design certification specifications, including CS-25, is required. Previous approval as a Technical Services Engineer within another organisation is desirable. Knowledge of Part 145 and Part 21 requirements, along with experience of working with OEM and approved design documentation, would also be advantageous.
