Technical Solution Designer

Fixed-term contract - 12 months

Preferred locations - Newcastle, Manchester, Sheffield, London, Brighton, Bristol

Salary: £50,000

St John Ambulance works at the heart of communities, supporting and enabling them to access and receive physical and mental health first aid. We do this through developing and providing effective community response and outreach services (e.g. Ambulance response) and using our longstanding expertise to empower people with vital clinical skills and the confidence to use them (e.g. our Volunteers and Community Advocates, and Young Responders programmes).

Job Summary

The Technical Solution Designer will play a key role in the replacement of St John Ambulance’s legacy training management platform. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape a new technology solution that will support the organisation’s training operations and improve how colleagues, volunteers and customers interact with our services.

You will develop a detailed understanding of the existing training platform, its business processes, integrations and data flows, working closely with teams across Training, Finance, Digital, Data and Technology, as well as external suppliers.

You will lead discovery, analysis and process-mapping activities to help define requirements, support procurement and solution selection, and ultimately contribute to the successful implementation of a new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform.

About You

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has experience in solution design, business analysis, systems analysis or a similar technology-focused role.
  • Has strong analytical skills and can understand complex systems, processes, integrations and data flows.
  • Is confident working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into practical solutions.
  • Has experience mapping and documenting business processes, system requirements and technical landscapes.
  • Can work collaboratively across multiple teams and build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external suppliers.
  • Is comfortable working with legacy systems and identifying opportunities for improvement and modernisation.
  • Has excellent communication and documentation skills, with the ability to clearly present complex information to different audiences.
  • Is proactive, organised and able to manage multiple priorities while working towards key project deadlines.

About the Role

In this role, you will:

  • Develop a detailed understanding of the existing training management platform, including its functionality, architecture, integrations, data flows and operational processes.
  • Lead discovery and analysis activities to understand current capabilities, challenges and future business requirements.
  • Work closely with stakeholders across Training, Finance, Digital, Data and Technology to gather and document requirements.
  • Map current and future business processes, identifying opportunities to simplify, improve and modernise ways of working.
  • Document the existing technical and business landscape to support procurement and the selection of a replacement solution.
  • Work with external suppliers and technology partners to assess potential SaaS solutions and their suitability for St John Ambulance.
  • Provide technical insight and challenge throughout the solution selection and implementation process.
  • Support the successful transition from the legacy platform to the new solution, ensuring that business, technical and operational requirements are understood and addressed.
