Technical Specialist

PLC Automation & Maintenance Engineer

Key Responsibilities

Technical Support & Maintenance

  • Provide on-site technical support for shift teams to resolve operational disruptions.
  • Offer robust fault resolution, including corrective and preventative maintenance, for PLC, mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems within Dematic’s scope on the customer’s site.
  • Ensure systems achieve customer and Dematic KPI targets consistently.
  • Advanced fault diagnosis and repairs for:
    • Mechanical defects
    • Electrical malfunctions
    • Electronic/PLC issues
    • PC, database, and networking problems
  • Prioritise system faults to minimise downtime and impact on production/logistics flow.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Strict adherence to Health & Safety legislation, including specialist duties such as working at height.
  • Maintain strict compliance with Dematic’s quality standards, customer requirements, and international standards like FEM and BS.
  • Accurately document all work undertaken per quality processes.

Customer Engagement & Service Delivery

  • Represent Dematic professionally and nurture customer relations through day-to-day interactions.
  • Monitor and steer third-party service contracts to meet key performance targets.
  • Serve as a point of escalation during critical breakdowns, guiding resolutions with control and diplomacy.

Improvement & Continuous Learning

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the client’s automation systems.
  • Monitor on-site spares and inventory to ensure optimal availability for repairs.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimisation in collaboration with the customer.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Apprenticeship or Diploma (Equivalent to HNC/Advanced National): In electrical or mechanical engineering is preferred.
  • Understanding of technical manuals & drawings: Mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems.

Technical Expertise

  • Advanced PLC knowledge (preference for Siemens platforms).
  • Choices/drives expertise: Inverter drives, barcode scanning equipment.
  • Industrial networking: Profibus, Profinet, ASi-bus, ASi-Safe, Ethernet.
  • Warehouse systems: Familiarity with Warehouse Control Systems (WCS) and/or Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) is advantageous.
  • Strong fault-finding ability with hands-on experience in mechanical and automated systems.

  • Conveyor/automation system maintenance: Strong experience with automated material handling systems.
  • Warehouse/plant environment: Proven ability to work in industrial settings, adapting to complex systems.
  • PPM schedules: Understanding of pre-preventive maintenance practices.
  • Shift work: Experience (or willingness) to operate during off-hours if necessary.

Soft Skills

  • Problem-solving aptitude: Critical to diagnosing and resolving complex faults on tight schedules.
  • Communication: Clear engagement with customers, technical teams, and third-party service providers.
  • Attention to detail & Quality focus: Ensuring Dematic and customer expectations are met.
  • Customer service orientation: Professional interactions with customers and stakeholders.
