About The Role

Technical Support Officer (Cemeteries) – Maldon District Council

Maldon, Essex

Full-Time, Temporary

37 Hours per Week

£15.00 PAYE / £19.24 Umbrella

Closing Date: Monday 12th October 2026

Essex County Council (ECC) are delighted to be recruiting a Technical Support Officer on an initial 6-month contract.

Due to the nature of this role, the successful candidate will be required to work on-site at least 3 days per week.

Team Purpose

To deliver a legal, safe, and compassionate cemeteries and bereavement service, ensuring compliance with statutory and council requirements, effective management of resources, and timely resolution of enquiries and issues, while developing staff and volunteer capacity and modelling integrity, resilience, and care in support of our communities.

Role Purpose

Support the delivery of the Council’s cemeteries, memorials, and bereavement services through effective day-to-day technical and operational activity.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, including the Burial Act and Local Authorities Cemeteries Order, and with council policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the delivery of a legal, safe, and sensitive service for customers, funeral directors, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Respond to enquiries, service issues, and complaints professionally and in a timely manner, escalating where appropriate.
  • Provide accurate technical advice and support to colleagues and assist with coordinating workloads and operational delivery across the service.
  • Support the effective use of resources and assist with income-related and administrative processes where required.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and partners, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, resilience, and compassion in all interactions.

Key Accountabilities

  • To provide effective operational and administrative support to the Council’s Cemeteries and bereavement service, ensuring activity is coordinated, recorded and progressed efficiently.
  • To support the management of enquiries, complaints, and service issues, ensuring they are responded to effectively and promptly, providing professional and sensitive support to customers, stakeholders, and contractors.
  • Support the maintenance of accurate records of burials, grave plots, memorials, and related documentation in compliance with statutory and Council requirements.
  • To act as a point of contact for internal services regarding cemeteries and bereavement related matters, providing guidance within defined procedures and escalating issues where required.
  • To support the smooth running of cemeteries and bereavement processes, contributing to consistent, customer-focused service delivery.
  • To identify opportunities to improve cemeteries and bereavement -related processes, workflows and self-service information.
  • Support compliance with cemetery legislation, Council policies, health & safety regulations, and risk management procedures.
  • Contribute to service improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance customer experience, operational efficiency, and value for money.
  • Support seasonal or special projects, including ceremonial events as required.

Knowledge, Experience, Skills And Ability

Knowledge

  • Understanding of administrative and coordination processes that support effective cemetery and bereavement service operations.
  • Working knowledge of council systems and procedures used to record, track, and manage cemetery-related information and requests.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles in a public sector or service delivery environment.
  • Awareness of health and safety, data protection, and confidentiality requirements relevant to cemetery operations.
  • Understanding of how cemetery services interact with other council services, contractors, and external partners.
  • Knowledge of record keeping and information management standards to ensure accuracy, compliance, and accountability.
  • Understanding of continuous improvement principles and the importance of efficient, customer-focused processes.

Experience

  • Experience in working within the Cemeteries industry.
  • Experience in an administrative, coordination, or support role within a service delivery environment.
  • Experience managing enquiries, service requests, or complaints, ensuring accurate recording and timely responses.
  • Experience maintaining records, databases, or information systems in line with agreed processes and data standards.
  • Experience providing clear and helpful support to internal customers, service users, or the public.
  • Experience working within policies, procedures, and health and safety requirements.
  • Experience managing competing priorities and working effectively in a busy operational environment.
