Technical Support Specialist (Hardware) – Semiconductors

Are you a Technical Support Specialist (Hardware) who can support our technical group in ensuring the global deployment, reliability, and performance of our systems? Our team provides technical expertise across:
- System hardware
- Control systems
- Manufacturing development
We collaborate with Applications, Customer Support, Engineering, and Manufacturing teams.

Salary & Benefits
- £55,000 to £62,000 (depending on experience)
- 25 days’ annual leave

About the Role
A typical day for a Technical Support Specialist (Hardware) involves:
Hardware Technical Support & Escalation
- Providing advanced troubleshooting for complex hardware issues across:
- Installed Metron3D systems
- Manufacturing builds
- Acting as the technical escalation point for:
- Field Service
- Applications teams
- Diagnosing issues across:
- Mechanical subsystems
- Optical subsystems
- Electronic subsystems
- Ensuring timely resolution of critical field issues.

System-Level Diagnostics
- Investigating system-level performance issues, including:
- Integration with OEM modules
- Custom components
- Collaborating with the Technical Support Specialist (Control Systems) to diagnose issues spanning hardware and control systems.
- Reproducing and analysing:
- Customer-reported issues
Root Cause Analysis & Corrective Actions
- Leading and contributing to structured root cause investigations for hardware-related faults.
- Partnering with engineering and manufacturing teams to identify and agree upon permanent corrective actions.
- Supporting:
- Design improvements
- Component updates
- Process changes.
Manufacturing & Build Support
- Collaborating with Manufacturing Development Engineers to support:
- System integration and build activities
- Troubleshooting hardware issues during assembly and integration
- Providing technical input on:
- Manufacturability
- Subsystem robustness
- System stability
- Supporting new product introduction, including:
- Testing
- Training
- Documentation
Field Issue Investigation
- Analysing:
- Field data
- Logs
- System performance reports
- Supporting failure analysis of:
- Returned components
- Subsystems
Technical Knowledge Development
- Developing and maintaining:
- Troubleshooting procedures
- Diagnostic workflows
- Technical documentation
- Capturing and sharing lessons learned from field issues.
- Supporting Customer Support and Applications teams with hardware training programmes.

Requirements
Essential Experience
To succeed as a Technical Support Specialist (Hardware), you must demonstrate:
- Extensive experience in:
- Precision electromechanical systems
- Opto-mechanical assemblies
- Expertise in:
- High-stability instrumentation (sub-micron precision)
- Knowledge of:
- Vibration isolation
- Nano-positioning stages
- Tight tolerance mechanical assemblies
- Proven diagnostic skills for:
- Complex system issues across mechanical, electronic and optical subsystems
- Scientific instrumentation and photonics
- Ability to:
- Analyse interactions between hardware, software, and environmental factors
- Explain complex technical challenges to key stakeholders
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with:
- Semiconductor equipment
- Wafer handling systems
- EFEM modules (Emerging Fab Equipment Modules)
- Semiconductor robotics
- Automated semiconductor tool architectures
- Familiarity with:
- Metrology tools
- Nanoscale microscopy systems
Education & Qualifications
- A relevant degree in Physics or Engineering
or equivalent experience through:
- Relevant apprenticeship route
- At least 5 years of accumulated industry experience
