Test & Qualification Lead (High Voltage) - Greenwich, London - Hybrid

Our client, a global leader in worldwide submarine telecommunications, are looking for a Test & Qualification Lead to lead the testing, verification, validation and qualification of the PFE (Power Feeding Equipment) product, ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards, functional requirements and system specifications.

The role is responsible for demonstrating that the product operates in accordance with its defined features and system design requirements. The PFE provides high-voltage (HV) electrical power to subsea communication cable systems, where exceptionally high levels of availability, reliability and safety are essential.

Main Accountabilities and Activities

  • Lead product and system-level verification and validation activities, ensuring that all relevant requirements are demonstrated through appropriate testing.
  • Plan, coordinate and lead internal and external product qualification campaigns, including electromagnetic interference and compatibility (EMI/EMC), environmental and safety testing.
  • Define test strategies, methodologies, plans and test configurations based on product and system requirements.
  • Establish and manage test setups, laboratory facilities, equipment requirements and associated capital expenditure (CapEx).
  • Ensure the effective flow-down of product and system requirements into verification and validation strategies and test specifications.
  • Develop and execute test plans, analyse results, investigate issues and produce technical reports for new products and existing products when required by projects or other departments.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight to assigned engineers and subcontractors, ensuring the quality and timely delivery of test activities.
  • Lead technical decision-making in verification and validation, considering product performance, reliability, safety, durability and risk.
  • Develop test concepts, rigs, fixtures, jigs, simulations and automated test solutions from initial planning through to commissioning.
  • Support software- and firmware-related testing, including simulation, test automation and system integration activities.
  • Estimate, plan and manage test activities, resources, schedules and deliverables in line with departmental quality objectives.
  • Identify, assess and communicate technical risks, test limitations and qualification issues, recommending appropriate corrective actions.

Responsibilities and Autonomy

  • Technical leadership: Take ownership of product and system-level verification, validation and qualification, ensuring that performance, reliability, safety and durability requirements are demonstrated before product release.
  • Qualification management: Plan and coordinate internal and external qualification programmes, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Test strategy and planning: Define validation strategies, test architectures, methodologies and configurations derived from system and product requirements.
  • Laboratory capability: Manage the development and maintenance of laboratory test capabilities, including test equipment specifications, capital expenditure and commissioning of new setups.
  • People and supplier management: Provide technical direction and oversight to assigned engineers and subcontractors, ensuring high-quality outputs and delivery against agreed milestones.
  • Technical decision-making: Drive decisions on verification and validation approaches that influence product design, technical risk, performance and reliability.
  • Test execution and reporting: Oversee test execution, interpret results, investigate anomalies and produce clear technical reports with evidence-based conclusions and recommendations.
  • Test development and automation: Lead the design, development and commissioning of test rigs, fixtures, simulations and automated test solutions.
  • Project and resource management: Estimate and manage validation activities, schedules, resources and deliverables in alignment with departmental quality goals.
  • Risk and issue management: Identify and escalate significant technical, resource, schedule and programme risks, ensuring that appropriate mitigation actions are implemented.
  • Autonomy and accountability: Operate with a high degree of autonomy in technical planning and execution, taking accountability for test quality, technical decisions and delivery of agreed objectives.

Required Experience and Competencies

Essential Experience

  • Proven experience in test development, test process management and implementation.
  • At least five years' experience in software, hardware and system testing of electronic products.
  • Experience developing and executing test strategies, test plans, test procedures and qualification programmes.
  • Experience analysing test results, investigating failures and producing technical reports.
  • Experience translating product and system requirements into verification and validation activities.
  • Experience working with test equipment, laboratory setups and test fixtures.
  • Experience coordinating technical activities across multidisciplinary engineering teams and external suppliers.

Essential Technical Competencies

  • Strong understanding of electronic and electrical systems and their verification and validation requirements.
  • Knowledge of system-level testing, integration testing and product qualification.
  • Understanding of EMI/EMC, environmental and product safety testing.
  • Ability to develop structured test methodologies and trace test results to defined requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including root-cause investigation and failure analysis.
  • Ability to interpret technical specifications, engineering documentation and test data.
  • Understanding of test automation, simulation and software/firmware testing principles.
  • Ability to assess technical risks and make evidence-based engineering decisions.

Leadership and Professional Competencies

  • Technical leadership and the ability to guide engineers and subcontractors.
  • Effective planning, prioritisation and coordination of multiple test activities.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
