About the role

Ecclesiastical Insurance, who are proudly part of Benefact Group, are looking for a Technical Underwriter to join our Gloucester office.

You’ll act as a technical specialist for Commercial Property and Liability Underwriting within our Direct Commercial Underwriting Team, providing expert support on complex cases, referrals, appetite, technical standards, and governance. Supporting profitable portfolio performance, building underwriting capability through coaching and training, and working with key stakeholders to deliver strong customer outcomes and continuous improvement.

What you'll be doing

  • Develop, negotiate, and profitably underwrite new and existing Commercial Property and Liability business within authority, ensuring alignment with underwriting appetite, strategy, portfolio objectives, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide senior technical underwriting expertise and referral support, making sound decisions on risk acceptance, pricing, coverage, policy wordings, terms and conditions, while maintaining technical standards and governance.
  • Monitor and manage portfolio performance, identifying trends in risk quality, profitability, rate adequacy, audit outcomes, and emerging risks, and implementing actions to improve underwriting quality and consistency.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop underwriting capability across the team, providing technical guidance, knowledge sharing, training, and updates to promote consistency, confidence, and best practice.
  • Support product, pricing, wording, process, and system development initiatives, providing technical insight, project support, and feedback from market, partner, and casework experience.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, pricing, claims, risk, and operational stakeholders, monitoring market, regulatory, and competitor developments, and translating insights into effective underwriting actions and continuous improvement.

What you'll need to have

  • Strong technical expertise in Commercial Property and Liability underwriting, including risk assessment, coverage, pricing, policy terms, conditions, controls, and underwriting appetite.
  • Proven experience underwriting complex Commercial Property and Liability risks, demonstrating sound judgment in risk selection, acceptability, pricing, and commercial decision-making.
  • Good understanding of portfolio management and performance, including rate adequacy, risk quality, exposure, profitability, audit outcomes, and emerging market trends.
  • Knowledge of underwriting governance and regulation, with the ability to apply underwriting standards, product governance, fair value, and conduct requirements consistently.
  • Strong leadership and stakeholder management skills, with experience providing technical referrals, coaching, mentoring, and building effective relationships across teams and partners.
  • Highly analytical, organized, and proactive, using data, MI, and audit insights to drive continuous improvement, share best practice, and support ongoing professional development, ideally supported by ACII, Dip CII, or equivalent qualifications.
