Welder/Fabricator – Engineering Team

About the Role

The Port of Dover is seeking a skilled Welder/Fabricator to join our Engineering team. This is a key position within our Mechanical function, where you will contribute to maintaining and repairing critical port infrastructure. In this role, you will act as a technical specialist in welding and fabrication, using advanced techniques to support the longevity and reliability of a diverse range of assets. Collaboration and self-reliance are key as you deliver high-quality results in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out new fabrication and repair welding across a range of plant and equipment
  • Perform welding techniques, including MMA (Manual Metal Arc), MMAW (MMAW), and GTAW (Tungsten Inert Gas)
  • Manufacture components and structures from engineering drawings using various materials
  • Support daily workshop operations, ensuring on-time and high-quality work completion
  • Execute planned preventative maintenance and routine repairs
  • Complete job reports and maintenance records via the Ports ERP system
  • Adhere to risk assessments, statutory regulations, and Health & Safety policies
  • Liaise with operations teams, contractors, and external stakeholders to minimise disruption
  • Mentor apprentices and colleagues through training and technical support
  • Assist with sourcing and procurement of parts, materials, and equipment
  • Respond to breakdowns and emergencies, including standby or shift rota participation

About You

Qualifications & Experience

  • Relevant apprenticeship (minimum NVQ Level 3 or equivalent)
  • Minimum 3 years’ post-qualification experience in welding and fabrication
  • Proven ability to interpret engineering drawings and produce high-quality fabrications
  • Experience in creating and reviewing risk assessments
  • Strong IT skills, including experience with ERP systems
  • Full UK driving licence

Working Environment

This is a physically demanding, hands-on role where you will:

  • Work in challenging conditions, including exposure to noise, weather, dust, and heavy plant environments
  • Require sustained physical effort and concentration over extended periods
  • Work flexibly, including overtime, call-outs, and participation in a standby or 24/7 rota (additional payments apply)

Hourly Details

  • Hours per week: Monday – Friday, 40 hours
  • Salary: £35,000

  • All offers are subject to satisfactory references (covering education, training, employment, and unemployment in the past 5 years)
  • Pre-employment medical including a Drug and Alcohol test
  • Eligibility checks for Right to Work in the UK
  • Successful hires will be subject to background security checks for a Dock Pass
