Job Description

The Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience is the premier marine research institute at the University of Florida. We are in an exciting phase of growth and invite applications for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in one of two broad areas: Technology-Driven Integrative Physiology — connecting molecular, cellular, neural, biomechanical or developmental mechanisms to organismal function, behavior, and environmental response; OR AI-Enabled Cell, Molecular, or Genomic Biology — building advanced AI, machine learning, and other computational approaches to address basic biological questions. The Whitney Lab is a research-focused institute committed to technology-driven marine bioscience. Our investigators leverage a broad diversity of organisms to address fundamental questions in biology, with potential applications to issues in human health, natural resources, and the environment. We seek an exemplary, creative, and collaborative scientist who will take advantage of Whitney’s unique marine setting and contribute to our interdisciplinary research mission.

This position is part of a multi-year investment in faculty hiring, infrastructure, and research innovation at the UF Whitney Lab. Our new $40 million research building (38,000 ft²) opened in Spring 2026 with state-of-the-art wet and dry labs, large temperature-controlled seawater mesocosms and aquaculture tank systems, and world-leading imaging capabilities within the Whitney Laboratory Center for Biological Imaging and Discovery.

The University of Florida offers competitive salaries, startup packages, and relocation support. An appointment may be made jointly with any UF department aligned with the candidate’s background (e.g., Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Soil and Water Science, College of Medicine). The successful candidate will join a diverse UF research community with connections across the UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation and Technology, the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, the Florida Museum of Natural History, the UF Genetics Institute, and the McKnight Brain Institute. UF is home to the fastest university-owned supercomputer (HiPerGator 4th Gen) and the NVIDIA AI Technology Center.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
