Job Description:

Own and continuously improve Upstream and Downstream R&D’s organisational performance and capability system, ensuring leadership has the insight, governance and workforce capability required to deliver strategic objectives, maximise portfolio value and improve organisational effectiveness. The role acts as the organisational performance lead for the R&D organisations in Technology and is accountable for defining performance frameworks, capability frameworks, governance approaches and improvement interventions that enable sustained business performance.

Key Accountabilities

Organisational Performance Management

  • Define and maintain performance management framework for Upstream and Downstream R&D
  • Establish common measures and standards across Upstream and Downstream R&D, working alongside Business Advisors and Performance Leads in Bioenergy and Refining &Fuels Technology
  • Ensure alignment between business objectives, portfolio outcomes and performance measures.
  • Identify emerging organisational performance trends, risks and opportunities.
  • Develop leadership insights and recommendations to improve organisational effectiveness.
  • Drive continuous improvement of performance practices across Upstream and Downstream R&D.
  • Develop and own insights for regular performance management reviews such as EPRs and OPRs.

Portfolio Performance & Value Management

  • Lead the methodology used to assess portfolio health and value delivery.
  • Develop approaches for value tracking and benefit realisation.
  • Find opportunities to improve investment effectiveness.
  • Support portfolio prioritisation and resource allocation discussions.
  • Ensure portfolio reporting drives decision making rather than compliance reporting.
  • Partner with Tax, Finance, Procurement, Legal and external advisors to support R&D tax incentive recovery and compliance programmes.
  • Drive awareness and capability building across Technology to ensure project delivery and contracting decisions consider implications for value recovery.
  • Establish governance, evidence bring together and performance measures that support successful tax incentive recovery claims.
  • Monitor value at risk and realised value associated with R&D incentives and other value recovery mechanisms.

Financial Performance Management

  • Partner with Finance to develop and maintain financial performance frameworks and reporting.
  • Monitor expenditure, investment performance and resource allocation across R&D portfolios.
  • Identify financial performance trends, risks and opportunities and support mitigation actions.
  • Ensure alignment between financial performance, portfolio performance and strategic priorities.
  • Support annual planning, forecasting and performance review cycles through integrated performance insights.

Capability Strategy

  • Define capability frameworks across Upstream and Downstream R&D.
  • Lead development of skills-to-careers approaches and workforce capability models alongside Talent and Learning team.
  • Establish capability measures and workforce health indicators.
  • Identify critical capability gaps and future workforce requirements.
  • Sponsor initiatives that strengthen organisational capability and talent mobility.

Organisational Effectiveness

  • Lead organisational effectiveness initiatives such as Pulse squad (aimed at understanding and act upon Pulse outcomes surveys).
  • Facilitate improvement activities that strengthen ways of working, accountability and performance.
  • Support leadership teams with organisational diagnostic and improvement activities.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment where required to improve performance.

Governance & Decision Support

  • Design governance processes and review forums.
  • Define performance and capability review approaches.
  • Support leadership teams through evidence-based insights and recommendations.
  • Ensure governance enables decision making and organisational learning.

Success Measures

  • Performance framework adopted across Upstream and Downstream R&D portfolios.
  • Improved quality and consistency of leadership decision making.
  • Improved organisational performance visibility.
  • Increased capability maturity and workforce readiness.
  • Improved portfolio value delivery.
  • Reduction in leadership time spent reconciling performance information.

Job Holder Requirements

(Minimum education, experience & capabilities)

Education

  • Bachelor's degree and/or MBA in relevant subjects (technology, finance, engineering) or equivalent preferred or equivalent experience.

Skills & Experience

  • Relevant experience in organisational performance, portfolio performance, capability management or organisational effectiveness within a complex technology, R&D or transformation environment.
  • Strong ability to translate business and technology strategy into performance frameworks, capability measures, governance approaches and actionable leadership insights.
  • Demonstrated experience developing performance measures, portfolio health indicators, benefit realisation approaches and workforce capability frameworks.
  • Strong analytical capability, with the ability to identify trends, risks, gaps and opportunities across performance, value delivery and organisational health.
  • Experience supporting senior leadership decision making through clear, evidence-based insights, recommendations and governance materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to employ AI-enabled tools, automation and digital solutions to improve organisational insight, performance management and decision support.
  • Confirmed ability to lead cross-functional improvement activity, align customers and influence outcomes across multiple teams or business areas.
  • Strong understanding of technology portfolio management, R&D performance, investment effectiveness and value realisation.
  • Strong facilitation, communication and relationship skills, with the ability to engage credibly with VP/SVP-level partners.
  • Commercial and strategic mentality, with the ability to connect performance, capability, investment and business outcomes.
  • Experience operating in ambiguous environments and improving ways of working, accountability and governance without adding unnecessary complexity.
