Data & Analytics Specialist – Data Governance
The Data & Analytics Specialist – Data Governance sits at the intersection of enterprise governance standards and business execution. This role is responsible for establishing common data standards, metric definitions, and quality controls, while actively consulting with business teams to provide templates, training, and best practices. You will empower teams across Morrisons to build and consume trustworthy, self-service data products safely and consistently. You will support the introduction of computational governance that is seen as an enabler and not a blocker. You will drive the creation of the Data Council and lead efforts to build the Data Community.
Accountabilities
The role will have the following accountabilities:
Customer (Internal Business Users & Leadership)
- Act as an internal consultant, helping business functions design consumable, reusable data products aligned with enterprise standards.
- Establish and publish standardised business definitions and core company metrics to ensure a single, consistent version of truth across all reporting.
- Manage and enrich the central Data Catalog, ensuring data assets are easy to discover, understand, and access without requiring technical intervention.
- Gather business requirements for governance and data quality, translating them into practical rules and automated checks.
Colleague (Enablement & Culture)
- Lead enablement initiatives across the organisation to build data literacy, product thinking, and stewardship capabilities.
- Create and maintain reusable governance toolkits, canvas templates, best-practice guides, and example builds for development teams.
- Foster an internal community of practice and empower domain "Data Champions" to drive local data ownership and accountability.
- Partner with engineering squads during development sprints to define data standards, validate acceptance criteria, and ensure compliance by design.
Cash & Profit
- Reduce operational waste and duplication by removing point-to-point data pipelines and redundant reporting.
- Enable faster time-to-insight for operational teams, directly supporting EBITDA improvements through faster, accurate decision-making.

Operational (Governance & Controls)
- Define and maintain data quality standards, automated verification rules, and service level expectations at the point of data creation.
- Embed security, privacy-by-design, and access management policies into all reusable data assets.
- Monitor asset health, lineage, and usage performance across the data landscape, recommending the retirement or consolidation of underutilised assets.
- Support the Data Leadership Council with tracking governance maturity, policy compliance, and risk registers.
About You
As a Data & Analytics Specialist – Data Product Governance & Enablement, you will have experience of:
- Working within enterprise Data Governance frameworks, Data Lifecycle Management, and Data Quality standards.
- Defining clear business data rules, standardised metric definitions, and data asset ownership models.
- Supporting business teams through cultural change, training, and capability building (data literacy).
- Managing central Data Catalogs, metadata, data lineage, and business glossaries.
- Establishing operational standards such as data delivery agreements (SLAs) and data quality metrics.
- Working within Agile and Waterfall delivery environments alongside cross-functional teams.
- Navigating data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR), access management, and information security requirements.
- Experience within retail, FMCG, manufacturing, or supply chain environments (desirable).
Key Skills & Abilities
- Stakeholder Management & Consulting: Ability to communicate complex data governance concepts in simple, business-oriented language to influence non-technical stakeholders.
- Framework & Process Design: Capability to create clear standards, documentation, and reusable templates that accelerate delivery rather than create friction.
- Problem Solving & Analytical Thinking: Strong ability to trace data inconsistencies back to root causes and define automated business rules to prevent them.
- Data Literacy Coaching: Passion for upskilling others, facilitating workshops, and building active user communities.
- Technical Understanding: Familiarity with modern cloud data platforms, business intelligence tools, and central catalog software.

Desirable
- Practical experience with Google Cloud Platform (BigQuery), Looker, or enterprise data catalog tools (e.g., Atlan).
- Practical SQL skills for reviewing, validating, and auditing datasets.
- Knowledge of DDaT (Digital, Data and Technology) framework capability models.
- Familiarity with automated data testing concepts and business semantic modeling.
