Established in 1982 by our Chairman, Joseph Gallagher, JGL has evolved into the largest and leading subcontractor for tunnelling in the United Kingdom. Role Summary:
In this role, you will provide technical support to various sectors of our business, including above ground structures and tunnelling teams. You will also assist the tendering team in developing construction methodologies and lead projects through the preconstruction design phase, producing designs, and offering technical support during the construction phase to assist the site teams.
The Role
This is a practical, design-focused role for an engineer who enjoys solving the engineering problems that sit between design and construction.
You will be responsible for developing temporary works solutions for heavy civil engineering projects, taking designs from an initial construction requirement through to detailed design, checking and construction support.
You will work closely with our Design Managers, Project Managers, Site Managers and Site Engineers to understand how the works need to be constructed and then develop temporary works that are safe, practical, buildable and proportionate to the project requirements.
The role will cover a broad range of heavy civils temporary works rather than being limited to one particular system or discipline.

Key Responsibilities
Temporary Works Design
- Develop temporary works solutions from initial brief through to construction.
- Review temporary works briefs and identify the engineering requirements.
- Establish appropriate design criteria, loads, constraints and assumptions.
- Develop practical temporary works solutions for complex construction activities.
- Produce engineering calculations and design reports.
- Produce or oversee temporary works drawings.
- Ensure designs consider the complete construction sequence.
- Consider installation, use, inspection, modification and removal of temporary works.
- Design temporary works in accordance with applicable standards, project requirements and JGL procedures.
- Identify where additional information, investigation or specialist input is required.

The role will require the ability to understand how structural and geotechnical behaviour interact within heavy civil engineering temporary works.
Constructability
Constructability will be a fundamental part of the role.
You will be expected to consider:
- How the temporary works will actually be installed.
- What plant will be available.
- How materials will be delivered.
- How components will be lifted.
- How the works will be inspected.
- How construction loads will be applied.
- How the temporary works will interact with permanent works.
- How the temporary works will be modified as construction progresses.
- How the temporary works will eventually be removed.
- What happens if site conditions differ from the design assumptions.
You will work directly with construction teams to develop solutions that work in the real world, not just on paper.
Site & Construction Support
This is not intended to be a role that is entirely office based.
You will be expected to engage with project and site teams and, where appropriate:
- Attend site visits.
- Review existing site conditions.
- Attend construction planning meetings.
- Discuss temporary works requirements with Site Managers and Site Engineers.
- Respond to technical queries.
- Review proposed construction changes.
- Assess deviations from the design.
- Provide technical clarification.
- Support investigations into unexpected site conditions.
- Update designs where the construction methodology changes.
- Assist with resolving temporary works problems during construction.
Design Risk Management
Temporary works can introduce significant construction risks, and the designer will be expected to actively manage these through the design process.
You will:
- Identify hazards associated with temporary works.
- Consider risks throughout the construction sequence.
- Eliminate or reduce risks through design where reasonably practicable.
- Prepare and maintain Design Risk Assessments.
- Identify residual risks.
- Communicate significant risks to the project and construction teams.
- Consider interfaces between temporary and permanent works.
- Consider the consequences of temporary works failure or misuse.
- Ensure design limitations and assumptions are clearly communicated.
Design Assurance
You will work within JGL's design and temporary works procedures to ensure designs are appropriately developed and checked before construction.
Responsibilities will include:
- Preparing designs for internal checking.
- Responding to design-check comments.
- Updating calculations and drawings.
- Supporting CAT 1, CAT 2 or independent checking where applicable.
- Maintaining design records.
- Ensuring revisions are controlled.
- Supporting the Design Manager and Temporary Works Coordinator through the assurance process.
- Ensuring construction information reflects the approved design.

The ability to communicate engineering concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical colleagues is important.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for an engineer with strong engineering fundamentals who wants to work at the interface between engineering design and heavy construction.
You will ideally have:
- HNC/HND or degree in Civil, Structural or Geotechnical Engineering.
- Experience working within heavy civil engineering, construction or infrastructure.
- Experience producing engineering calculations.
- Experience in temporary works design, or demonstrable experience that provides a strong foundation for developing into temporary works.
- Working knowledge of BS 5975.
- Understanding of CDM designer responsibilities.
- Understanding of construction methodology and sequencing.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, surveys and ground investigation information.
- Ability to develop practical engineering solutions.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while recognising when specialist advice is required.
