About The Role

The Sizewell C (SZC) project requires a Temporary Works Design Manager to take a role in the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), Marine and Tunnelling Portion, Engineering and Technical Team, ensuring technical delivery of complex designs across these interfaces with an emphasis on ensuring construction feasibility.

The role requires management of development and implementation of temporary work design proposals ensuring they meet requirements including interface coordination with permanent works, ensuring buildability and acceptance from construction delivery teams, budget constraints, and presenting proposals for client approval. The project team includes people internal to the CWA, lead design consultant(s), internal and external temporary work designer(s), and subcontractors.

What you'll be doing

  • Engage with the project team on all matters relating to temporary works design including confirmation of brief, development and production of designs, review and acceptance for implementation, construction, inspection/assurance, and removal.
  • Team building and coordination including management of Temporary Work Coordinators and internal Temporary Work Designers.
  • Ensure adequate planning and provision for independent checks, peer reviews and technical reviews.
  • Ensure sufficient documentation and clear exchange and understanding of design and construction risks.
  • Ensure effective arrangements are in place and maintained for TW design meetings to satisfy the delivery programme priorities.
  • Ensure review, management and coordination of subcontractor generated TW designs including site installations, tunnelling and marine construction activities (e.g. formwork, falsework, temporary working platforms, etc.)
  • Report on resolution of TW designs including interfaces with permanent works and subcontractor designs.
  • Provide advice and guidance on the “buildability” of the design proposals to the design and construction teams on all packages.
  • Report on completeness and resolution of the designs against programme priorities.
  • Produce and maintain design management plans and TW design lookahead against agreed give get schedules.
  • Support Change Control Process
  • Lead Value Engineering Process as appropriate
  • Support digital delivery of the project ensuring delivery teams and supply chain are aware of requirements.
  • Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm.

Additional Activities

  • Support development and implementation of digital processes/culture/technology to support project delivery during the Design, Construction and Handover phases.
  • Digital Coordination between project participants.

Who we're looking for

Knowledge & Skills

This role requires an individual with proven experience in delivering design services on site during construction stage and successfully implementing design strategies.

  • Construction or technical assurance role involving engagement with stakeholders on design, including interfacing designers, asset owners / operators and subcontractor designers;
  • Effective communicator, both listening to others and explaining own considerations to seek agreement on what is best for project;
  • Positive approach to teamwork and collaboration, demonstrate leadership and proactiveness with the rest of the project team, including the client and key stakeholders;
  • Use of 3D and 4D modelling software for industrial applications;
  • Design review process, model management and BIM clash detection;
  • Implement the project Design Management Plan, BIM Execution Plan and other associated documents;
  • Experience of working collaboratively in a contractor environment;
  • Proficiency in IT and numeracy;
  • Good communication and ability to form effective relationships with the project team, supply chain partners and clients under time pressure;
  • Demonstrable track record of delivering a high quality product to tight deadlines; and
  • Valid CSCS card

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree and professionally qualified.
  • Minimum 10 years demonstrable and relevant experience of which at least 2 must be in a leading TW design management role.
  • Major Project Construction industry experience with experience of design production and/or coordination for civil, structural and tunnelling works in a contractor led environment.
