About The Role
Balfour Beatty is seeking a motivated and technically capable Temporary Works Designer to join our Regional Scotland team within UK Defence, Power & Regional Infrastructure.
In this role, you will provide temporary works design expertise across a diverse portfolio of infrastructure and construction projects. Working closely with project teams, temporary works coordinators and engineers, you will develop safe, practical and cost-effective temporary works solutions that support successful project delivery.
This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer with strong temporary works experience who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges while contributing to some of the UK's most ambitious infrastructure projects. Information is based on the role profile provided.
What you'll be doing
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver temporary works designs to agreed programmes, quality standards and budgets.
- Provide technical support to operational teams and work-winning activities across the Regional Scotland business and wider Balfour Beatty divisions.
- Develop and assess alternative temporary works solutions in collaboration with site teams.
- Monitor and report on design progress to key stakeholders.
- Undertake site visits to gather information, develop design briefs and support project teams and Temporary Works Coordinators.
- Identify, assess and communicate design risks, preparing Designer Risk Assessments where required.
- Ensure specified design checks are completed and certified in accordance with project requirements.
- Support value engineering initiatives and identify innovative, practical and efficient temporary works solutions.
- Assist with temporary works assurance activities, including audits and project reviews to promote best practice and continuous improvement.
- Champion Zero Harm and support sustainability initiatives across projects.
Who we're looking for
We're looking for an enthusiastic engineering professional who can combine technical expertise with strong stakeholder engagement skills.
Essential Experience & Skills
- Thorough knowledge of engineering principles and temporary works design practices.
- Experience applying relevant industry standards and guidance, including Eurocodes, British Standards, DMRB, CIRIA and CPA guidance.
- Understanding of construction methodologies, programme requirements and cost-effective design solutions.
- Previous experience in site-based engineering or construction activities.
- Strong analytical and numerical skills, with experience using engineering and design software such as CADS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit or Robot.
- Excellent Microsoft Office skills, including Excel, Word, Teams and PowerPoint.
- Strong report writing and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering work through to completion.
- A collaborative approach with excellent interpersonal and influencing skills.
- Valid CSCS card.

Desirable
- Degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng), MICE status, or actively working towards professional registration.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution.
- Ability to produce temporary works drawings using Autodesk AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D.
- Experience within the construction industry or a project-based organisation.
