A growing and well-established engineering consultancy is looking for an experienced and motivated Temporary Works Engineer to join its team in Exeter.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with 3+ years UK construction design experience and a strong understanding of temporary works and BS 5975 to take on a varied and rewarding role within a supportive engineering environment.
You'll work across a diverse range of construction sectors, delivering bespoke temporary works solutions for clients while developing your technical, commercial and project management skills.
The Role
As a Temporary Works Engineer, you'll be involved throughout the design process, from initial enquiries and site surveys through to concept development, detailed design and technical delivery.
You'll have the opportunity to work on challenging projects, develop innovative engineering solutions and build strong relationships with both new and existing clients.
Responsibilities
- Designing and developing temporary works solutions for a wide range of UK construction projects.
- Acting as a key point of contact for selected clients and supporting the delivery of larger projects.
- Preparing Temporary Works Design Briefs, assisting clients in developing project requirements, and producing concept and detailed designs, calculations and technical drawings.
- Developing complex engineering solutions and presenting them clearly and effectively to clients.
- Carrying out site visits, surveys and investigations.
- Preparing quotations for customer enquiries.
- Supporting project forecasting.
- Providing technical support to colleagues and clients throughout the design process.
- Managing multiple projects independently, prioritising your workload and meeting deadlines.
- Supporting and coordinating junior members of the team.
- Keeping up to date with relevant legislation, standards, software and industry best practice.
- Supporting the organisation's commitment to health and safety and ensuring designs are developed in accordance with CDM 2015 and relevant temporary works procedures.

About You
We're looking for someone who combines strong technical ability with excellent communication skills and a practical, client-focused approach.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Minimum of 3 years experience within a UK construction design environment and ideally significant temporary works experience.
- Good knowledge and understanding of BS 5975 and temporary works principles.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to explain engineering concepts clearly to clients and colleagues.
- Strong mathematical and numerical skills.
- Excellent 2D AutoCAD experience and the ability to interpret engineering drawings, sections, details and general arrangements.
- Strong IT skills, confidence working with engineering software and digital tools.
- Ability to manage multiple projects effectively while working to deadlines.
- Proactive approach to problem solving and a genuine interest in developing practical engineering solutions.

Desirable Experience
- Working towards Chartered Engineer status with the ICE or IStructE.
- Experience in permanent works civil or structural engineering.
- Previous experience supervising, mentoring or supporting junior engineers.
- Experience in a client-facing or project management role.
