Test and Applications Engineer – Chelmsford

Salary: Negotiable

About the Role

An exciting opportunity is available for a Test and Applications Engineer to join a global engineering organisation developing advanced technology for the Aerospace, Defence, Space, Industrial, Medical and Scientific sectors. Working within a multidisciplinary RF Power team, you will contribute to the development, evaluation and delivery of next-generation products. The position combines practical laboratory testing, fault finding and technical analysis with customer-facing application support.

This role would suit an experienced Production Test Engineer, RF Test Engineer or Electronics Engineer with hands-on experience of measurements, troubleshooting and structured test processes.

Duties

  • Develop, implement and carry out test plans for high-power RF products and systems.
  • Conduct RF performance testing, measurements, fault diagnosis and failure analysis.
  • Use specialist laboratory equipment including spectrum analysers, network analysers and signal generators.
  • Analyse test results and identify opportunities to improve product performance and reliability.
  • Provide technical application support to customers, resolving performance and integration queries.
  • Work closely with design, manufacturing and quality teams throughout product development.
  • Assist with the development of test procedures and automated test systems.
  • Produce accurate technical documentation, test reports and application notes.
  • Support products through the development lifecycle, from prototype and validation through to production and customer handover.
  • Apply knowledge of systems architecture and practical engineering principles to resolve technical challenges.
  • Plan and undertake a range of testing activities, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently and on schedule.
  • Contribute to a proactive health and safety culture, including risk assessment and mitigation.
  • Travel within the UK and overseas when required in a customer-facing capacity, typically 5–10% per year.

Requirements

  • Must have a degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or equivalent professional engineering experience.
  • Practical knowledge of RF testing, measurement techniques and applications support is required.
  • Experience working from engineering instructions, procedures and technical documentation is essential.
  • Must have hands-on experience using RF test equipment and interpreting measurement data.
  • Strong analytical, fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to work effectively within a small, multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to discuss technical issues with customers and colleagues.
  • A proactive approach with strong attention to detail.
  • A willingness to learn and develop specialist technical knowledge.
  • Knowledge of magnetron and travelling wave tube operation would be preferable
  • Understanding of RF principles, RF power monitoring systems and associated measurement techniques would be ideal
  • Experience with high-voltage testing and electrical safety is desirable
  • Understanding of the BS EN 61010 electrical safety standard and Low Voltage Directive requirements preferable
  • Experience across a complete product lifecycle, from initial development and design through to final product and customer handover would be a benefit.
  • Experience in high-power RF, microwave, electronics or related engineering environments preferred
