Opportunity Overview

We are seeking a talented Thermal Laboratory Operative to join our Thermal Measurement Laboratory, part of Energy House Labs. In this role, you will support the delivery of UKAS-accredited thermal testing services, contributing to a well-established facility with over 45 years' experience delivering accredited commercial testing and independent certification across the thermal insulation and construction sectors. Working closely with the Quality Manager, you will play a key role in maintaining our high standards of testing, data analysis and quality assurance, while collaborating with clients, regulatory bodies and multidisciplinary colleagues across the University.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out calibrations and independent thermal testing to written procedures, providing high-quality commercial testing, analysis and reporting in accordance with UKAS Accreditation and UK Approved Laboratory standards.
  • Support the planning, coordination and delivery of client tests, including sample handling, accurate record-keeping, and preparing and checking timely test reports.
  • Assist with formal audits of equipment and laboratory processes, complete regular equipment maintenance and calibration, and help maintain the Laboratory's accredited quality systems, proposing corrective actions where needed.

About the School / Department

Energy House Laboratories is a large research and innovation unit within the University of Salford's Faculty of Science, Engineering and Environment. The group focuses on the delivery of net zero and low energy buildings and products, and on a wide range of digital energy services and applications for the domestic sector. The group is made up of four labs, Energy House 1, Energy House 2.0, the Smart Meters > Smart Homes Lab (SMSHL) and the Thermal Measurement Lab. The role holder will join the Thermal Measurement Laboratory, working as part of Energy House Labs, the post offers the opportunity to contribute to a broad range of research and commercial activities relating to building physics, insulation materials and energy conservation for external clients and the wider research community.
