We Are Newham

We’re a vibrant, dynamic, culturally rich London Borough with a young population and bags of potential. We’re a challenging yet rewarding place to practise social work, with the networks in place to enable you to be the best social worker you can be and make a real difference to our children and their families. Our social care services were rated to be OUTSTANDING overall by Ofsted, with leadership rated as OUTSTANDING, but we have not stopped striving to be better.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated practitioner to join our prevention offer within the Integrated Youth Support Service (IYSS). Continuing the successful work of the Thriving Communities, the Thriving Practitioner role will support children and young people to achieve their aspirations and be safe in their communities.

The successful candidate will be part of a small team working intensively with children and young people who are at risk in their community or vulnerable to harm outside of their home. You will be experienced in youth work, have experience of working directly with children and families experiencing complex challenges and are creative and proactive in engaging children and young people. The team will provide support for families presenting needs relating to the following:

  • Persistent absence
  • Missing from home
  • Substance misuses
  • Behavioural challenges
  • Poor mental health and mental wellbeing including bullying

Apply now to be part of a life changing initiative for children and young people in Newham.

About the Job

The Thriving Practitioners will play a key role in contributing to the provision of effective multi-agency preventative support, and working towards positive outcomes for children and young people to reduce risk and prevent offending following a ‘risk led’ and ‘child first’ framework.

The duties of this role will be to work relationally with children and young people, including undertaking planning, interventions within a multi-agency context working closely with statutory and voluntary and community partners. We’re aiming to prevent offending and improve outcomes for young people who are affected by exploitation and harm outside of the home, siblings of those who come into contact with the youth justice system (family, victims). Additionally, this role will include participating in the delivery of a wide range of YJS programmes on an individual and group work basis.

Reporting to the Senior Practitioner, the Thriving Practitioners will work alongside the wider prevention offer within the IYSS and Youth Justice colleagues, working to prevent and reduce the negative impacts of youth offending on our children, young people, and their families.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About You

You will be a passionate advocate for children and young people affected by exploitation and peer violence, with experience and knowledge of the youth justice system and a strong understanding of the factors that can increase a young person’s vulnerability to harm and involvement in youth crime. You will be skilled in building trusted relationships with young people and delivering effective, age-appropriate interventions that recognise their individual needs, strengths and experiences.

We are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, who can engage and build a rapport with young people and their families, who is confident acting with discretion and sensitivity with confidential information, and who wants to make a positive difference to young people’s lives.

You have experience working in a multi-agency, public sector or voluntary sector setting, carrying out case management and report writing on young people’s assessed needs, and experience of appropriate assessment, intervention planning, intervention delivery and effective case management recording.

You have knowledge and understanding of integrated working with services involved with youth justice, and confidence planning and engaging young people in group work programmes that address offending behaviour. You are a quick thinker and problem solver who can analyse information and use this to inform assessments and decisions regarding criminal justice proceedings and finding solutions for young people at risk of offending and re-offending.
