Tooling Design Engineer : GBP 35.80/hr (Inside IR35) : Warwickshire (hybrid potential) : 9 Months (potential for yearly renewal)
Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tooling Design Engineer to join a premium automotive client on a contract basis. This role is integral to the design and manufacturing process, requiring expertise in engineering design, tooling, and manufacturing processes. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the highest standards of design, manufacturability, and quality are met.
Responsibilities
- Design for manufacture, including tooling design and hands-on practical skills.
- Create and manage technical blueprints, drawings, layouts, and simulation models using CAD/CAM/CAE software.
- Capture, define, and control all GD and T information, significant characteristics, and critical characteristics.
- Collaborate with teams to select suitable materials for sub-components.
- Perform calculations and testing to support fixing designs (adhesives, fasteners, etc.).
- Design parts to ensure good manufacturability and create jigs/fixtures for assembly.
- Customize CAD/CAM/CAE software to model complex or unusual designs.
- Develop digital prototypes and conduct design simulations to verify reliability, safety, and optimize engineering processes.
- Recommend changes to component designs based on digital prototyping and simulation outcomes.
- Provide materials lists and cost estimates as required.
- Manage design verification test plans, including detailed planning and support for engineering test teams.
- Work with supplier teams to develop resolution plans for hardware issues.
- Undertake additional tasks as directed by the line manager.

Qualifications
- Advanced education and significant work experience in CAD/CAM/CAE design and engineering.
- Proficiency in CAD software, such as CATIA or equivalent.
- Detailed knowledge of GD and T and experience with FMEA.
- Strong understanding of diecasting, injection moulding, machining, pressing, stamping, painting, and associated manufacturing processes.
- Experience in bolted joint and adhesive force calculations.
- Knowledge of automotive tooling design considerations and mould flow analyses.
- Familiarity with quality methods such as 8D, FMEA, and Fault Tree Analysis.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to explain technical issues to stakeholders.
- A proactive, independent, and critical thinker with a logical approach to problem-solving.
- Willingness to learn and take responsibility for personal development.

Day-to-Day
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and refine engineering designs.
- Utilize CAD/CAM/CAE software to create and modify technical drawings and models.
- Conduct design simulations and testing to ensure reliability and manufacturability.
- Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing teams to address and resolve design challenges.
- Manage and oversee design verification test plans and ensure compliance with standards.
- Provide technical expertise and mentorship to junior team members.

This role is on a contract basis and is Inside IR35.
