Role Description
The Track Handback Engineer (T002) role is a contract, on-site position based in the London Area, United Kingdom. This role is responsible for inspecting, assessing, and certifying permanent way and associated rail works to confirm they meet technical standards and are safe for operational use.

Day-to-day tasks include:
- Conducting detailed track inspections
- Reviewing engineering documentation
- Validating compliance with specifications
- Preparing handback reports and certifications
The Track Handback Engineer works closely with construction teams, site managers, and client representatives to resolve technical issues, manage defects, and agree remedial actions where required. The role also involves monitoring safety performance, contributing to risk assessments and method statements, and supporting continuous improvement in track quality and handover processes.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in permanent way engineering, track construction, maintenance, or inspection within a rail environment.
- Knowledge of relevant rail standards, technical specifications, and handback procedures (e.g., Network Rail standards and T002 requirements).
- Strong capability in interpreting engineering drawings, work package plans, inspection reports, and quality assurance documentation.
- Proven track record of working safely in live rail environments, with a thorough understanding of rail safety rules and site protocols.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with project teams and client representatives.
- High attention to detail and analytical skills for identifying defects, assessing risk, and making sound engineering judgments under time constraints.
- Relevant rail or engineering qualifications, such as NVQ or diploma in rail engineering, civil engineering, or permanent way, or equivalent experience.
- Professional certifications or competencies in handback or inspection (e.g., T002, PTS, or other rail-specific competencies) are highly beneficial.
- Ability to work on-site across multiple locations in the London Area, with flexibility to support night or weekend possessions
