Job Description
Teledyne Valeport have more than 50 years’ experience designing and manufacturing oceanographic, hydrographic, and hydrometric instruments. We are committed to supplying innovative, high-quality, reliable instrumentation, and our philosophy of keeping development and manufacturing entirely in-house means we can retain complete control over all aspects of our product range.
Our stunning riverside premises in the picturesque town of Totnes in the southwest of the UK houses every facility required for design, CNC machining, environmental testing, assembly, calibration, and servicing. This end-to-end approach means customers can have complete faith in our expertise and be assured that we will continue to provide them with the high levels of quality, performance, and service they have come to expect.
We are looking for a Trade Compliance & Shipping Supervisor to join our business, managing a small team consisting of two Customs Analysts and a Logistics Coordinator. You will be responsible for all administrative aspects of export compliance and shipping, ensuring compliance with all applicable corporate, legal, and regulatory requirements.
Please note that this role is 100% site-based at St Peters Quay, Totnes, Devon.
Key Responsibilities:
- Upon notification of goods readiness and in line with all corporate and regulatory requirements, ensure shipments are made on a timely basis in line with customer/supplier requirements and with the intention of achieving 100% on-time delivery.
- Ensure correct end-user paperwork is received and make license applications in accordance with all relevant regulations. Ensure goods are not shipped until correct authorizations are in place.
- Ensure software and technology exports and transfers are adequately controlled in line with current regulations.
- Oversee customs and shipping processes to ensure accuracy of entries and clearance instructions.
- Manage and maintain standard operating procedures pertaining to Trade Compliance for import and export activities, including post entry review, HTS Classification, Country of Origin, valuation & preference, export classification, export licensing, and sanctions compliance. These procedures must align with Teledyne Corporate requirements.
- Identifying potential areas of import/export customs compliance vulnerability and risk within the organisation. Evaluate, investigate, and communicate potential risks to the Operations Director along with actions to mitigate.
- With in-house trained experts (JC Focal Group), ensure standard product commodity codes and export classifications are accurately assigned to hardware and technology.
- Provide advice and guidance to employees within the organisation with regards to trade compliance associated with international transactions.
- Act as a point of contact for any internal or external enquiries and audits related to export/import compliance.
- Identify all training needs within the organisation with regards to export/import customs compliance.
- Complete periodic self-assessments, implementing corrective actions as required.
- Ensure complete and thorough records are kept and efficiently maintained for all imports/exports in line with the HMRC regulations and Teledyne Corporate policy.
- Ensure all operating areas are kept clean, tidy, and secure.

Qualifications & Experience:
- Working knowledge & recent experience of UK customs regulations for import and export compliance, policies, documentation, and processes including Inward Processing Relief (IPR) and export clearance.
- Detailed knowledge of HTS and HMRC Customs Procedure Codes.
- Good understanding of export controls as they apply to general commercial product lines.
- Knowledge of UK Government export licensing and application processes.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to supervise a small team including daily workload, priority setting, and annual performance reviews.
- Strong computer skills, ERP skills a plus (IFS preferable).
