Role Type: Full Time / Permanent

Location: Hybrid/Field Based – York

The Dormant Distillery Company operates one of the worlds’ leading Whisky Specialist retailers, Royal Mile Whiskies, in Edinburgh and St Andrews.

Royal Mile Whiskies Trade is a fast-growing part of the business, supplying both the on and off trade with premium and craft spirits. We pride ourselves on building long-term relationships with customers and suppliers with passionate staff, effective and adaptable logistics, and market-leading customer service.

Founded in 1998, the company also runs a specialist tobacconist on the Royal Mile – The Cigar Box – and in 2011 opened two specialist Drinks retail shops in Edinburgh and Pitlochry – Drinkmonger – with the vision to provide the most comprehensive range of quality alcohol products in Scotland.

The Role: Trade Sales Manager – North of England

This position will play a pivotal role in driving sales and expanding market share within the RMW trade profit centre. It will cover the management of existing trade customers, along with discovering and pursuing new sales prospects. Sales growth should be carefully and responsibly managed to ensure budgeted sales and margin are achieved. Excellent communications skills will be required to maintain market-leading customer service and ensure the company is competitive.

Flexible working is essential, especially during busy periods – some weekend and evening work may be required, along with travel through Northern England and potentially other parts of the UK.

The position requires strategic thinkers who can build and nurture relationships with key stakeholders, suppliers, and customers. Excellent product knowledge across our extensive, specialist portfolio is key in being an effective ambassador for our brand.

The Trade Sales Manager - North of England position will report to the Head of Trade.

Responsibilities:

Business Development & Growth

  • Identify and secure new accounts across the North of England, primarily targeting independent bars, high-end restaurants, hotel groups, and specialist off-licences.
  • Develop and execute a strategic sales plan to achieve monthly, and annual revenue targets.
  • Penetrate key territories (e.g., York, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield, Liverpool) with a focus on building a sustainable pipeline

Account Management & Relationship Building

  • Act as the primary point of contact for key accounts, ensuring high levels of service and retention.
  • Build strong relationships with Owners, GM’s, and Procurement Managers to become a trusted advisor on spirits trends and portfolio strategy.
  • Negotiate customer pricing and resolve any operational issues swiftly.
  • Liaise with both local and national suppliers to maximise customer support and ensure we offer a clear, relevant route to market.
  • Work closely with company support teams to ensure new customers are correctly onboarded, and relevant due diligence is carried out, prior to credit terms being confirmed. Follow company credit control policy to minimise risk and bad debt.

Brand Advocacy & Education

  • Lead in-house training sessions for staff, ensuring deep product knowledge and enthusiasm for the brands we sell.
  • Collaborate with marketing to organise launch events, tasting evenings, and industry showcases.
  • Provide market intelligence and competitor analysis to senior management to refine our regional strategy.

Sales Operations

  • Utilise our CRM system to track activities, forecast sales, and manage the sales pipeline accurately.
  • Monitor stock levels and liaise closely with purchasing colleagues to ensure timely ordering to prevent out-of-stocks.
  • Work closely with the logistics team to ensure smooth delivery and presentation of goods.
  • Maintain a high standard of professional conduct and ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements in all trade sales activities.
  • Represent the company at industry events, trade shows, and customer meetings to promote our business.

Additional Info, Salary, and Benefits

This is a permanent, full-time post. The salary is dependent on experience.

Our office hours are 9:00 to 17:30, Monday to Friday. Some weekend work may be required. Flexible working is available.
