Fife Council is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Trading Standards Officer to join our professional and forward-thinking team. You will play a key role in investigating complaints, tackling unfair trading practices, supporting businesses to comply with the law, and protecting vulnerable consumers from harm.
This varied role offers opportunities to work across a wide range of regulatory functions including consumer protection, fair trading, product safety, scams prevention, legal metrology, and business compliance.
As a progressive employer, we offer the opportunity to work in this role as a blended working arrangement, combining homeworking with office and field-based duties across Fife as required.
Job Details
Fife Council's Trading Standards Service is committed to creating a fair, safe and compliant trading environment that protects consumers and supports responsible businesses. We are seeking a qualified Trading Standards Officer to help deliver a modern, intelligence-led regulatory service across Fife.
No two days are the same. You will investigate complaints and service requests, gather and assess intelligence, carry out inspections and audits, provide advice to businesses and consumers, and take appropriate enforcement action where necessary.
You will work on a broad range of Trading Standards matters including consumer protection, unfair trading, product safety, scams prevention, business compliance, and legal metrology. The role also involves supporting vulnerable consumers, participating in preventative initiatives, and delivering education and awareness activities within local communities.

Working closely with colleagues and partner agencies including Police Scotland, OPSS, Trading Standards Scotland, and other regulatory bodies, you will contribute to a coordinated approach to protecting consumers and legitimate businesses from harm.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys investigation work, problem-solving, and working directly with businesses and members of the public. You will manage your own caseload, make evidence-based decisions, and contribute to service priorities and continuous improvement initiatives.
As a blended working role, much of your administrative and case management work can be undertaken remotely, although regular travel throughout Fife will be required to carry out inspections, investigations, visits and other operational activities.
The Person
You will be educated to SCQF Level 9 and hold an appropriate Trading Standards qualification, such as the CTSI Diploma, Diploma in Consumer Affairs and Trading Standards (DCATS) which must include the metrology module, or an equivalent qualification. Candidates who are currently working towards a recognised Trading Standards qualification, which includes the metrology module, may also be considered.
You should have:
- Experience in Trading Standards, regulatory enforcement, investigation, compliance or a similar regulatory environment.
- Knowledge of Trading Standards legislation and enforcement principles.
- Strong investigative and analytical skills with the ability to gather, assess and present evidence.
- Experience of advising businesses and members of the public.
- Excellent communication and report-writing skills.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.
- Strong partnership-working and relationship-building skills.
- Good IT skills and experience of maintaining accurate case records.
- A customer-focused approach with an awareness of safeguarding and vulnerability issues.
- A full UK driving licence and the ability to travel throughout Fife.
- Experience of legal proceedings, inspections, intelligence-led regulation, and legal metrology is required.
