Make a Difference to Road Safety Across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Hertfordshire
We are seeking a motivated and knowledgeable Traffic Management Officer to join our Road Safety Team supporting Bedfordshire Police, Cambridgeshire & Hertfordshire Constabulary (BCH).
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with an interest in road safety and traffic management to provide specialist advice and guidance on a wide range of traffic management, highway engineering and road safety matters. You will work with police colleagues, local authorities, National Highways, developers, event organisers and other partners to help reduce road danger and improve safety for all road users.

About The Role
As the Traffic Management Officer, you will provide expert advice on traffic management and road safety issues, influencing strategic and operational decisions across the BCH alliance.
You will play a key role in supporting road safety initiatives, analysing traffic data, reviewing major developments and events, and working with partners to identify engineering and enforcement solutions aimed at reducing fatal and serious injury collisions.
The role offers a varied workload, combining technical analysis, stakeholder engagement, site inspections, consultation responses and strategic representation.
Key Responsibilities
You will:
- Act as the force subject matter expert on traffic management and road safety matters.
- Respond to consultations from National Highways, local authorities, planning bodies, parish councils and members of the public.
- Provide advice and support to Safety Advisory Groups (SAGs) and major event planning teams.
- Deploy, collect and analyse traffic data recording equipment to assess traffic speed, volume and vehicle weight information.
- Support police and highway authority interventions designed to reduce killed and seriously injured (KSI) collisions.
- Participate in Road Safety Audits (Stages 2, 3 and 4).
- Conduct site visits following fatal road traffic collisions and liaise with highway authorities and Forensic Collision Investigation Units.
- Review major housing development proposals and provide specialist traffic management advice through planning consultation processes.
- Prepare formal responses on behalf of Chief Officers regarding traffic management matters.
- Represent BCH at local, regional and national meetings, forums and working groups.
- Attend Safety Advisory Groups, providing procedural, legislative and operational advice.
- Identify and report highway defects and road infrastructure concerns.
- Provide specialist advice to senior officers, road policing units and external partners.
- Administer cycle time trial notifications.

About You
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:
- Knowledge of traffic management, road safety, highways or a related discipline.
- Relevant qualifications in traffic management, road safety or highway engineering, or the ability to acquire them.
- An ability to contribute to projects and support the delivery of outcomes.
- Strong partnership-working and stakeholder engagement skills.
- The ability to research and prepare reports, business cases or consultation responses.
- Sound IT skills and the ability to work with data collection and analysis systems.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must:
- Hold a full UK driving licence.
- Be willing and able to travel across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and nationally as required.
- Successfully complete the required vetting process.
- Undertake training relevant to the role.
- Comply with all health and safety requirements.
