Role: Traffic Signals Engineer

Location: Leeds Department: Operations Duration: Permanent Salary: £24,000 – £34,000 per year


About the Role

We’re seeking a **driven and reliable Traffic Signals Engineer to join our Field Engineering Services team. This role involves maintaining, diagnosing, and commissioning critical traffic infrastructure—from signals and signs to Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)—ensuring smooth, safe journeys for road users daily.


Responsibilities

Working alongside a skilled field engineering team, your key tasks include:

  • Maintenance & Fault-Finding:
    • Carry out routine and reactive maintenance on traffic signals, road signs, and ITS equipment.
    • Diagnose and resolve electrical, electronic, and communication faults.

  • Installation & Commissioning:

    • Assist with installation, testing, and commissioning of new/upgraded equipment.
  • Compliance & Documentation:

    • Meet contractual response times and repair deadlines.
    • Complete all technical and compliance documentation accurately.
  • Health, Safety & Quality:

    • Support QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety & Environmental) objectives.
    • Maintain company vehicles, tools, and PPE safely.
  • Operational Readiness:

    • Participate in standby and out-of-hours call-outs.
    • Represent SWARCO professionally at all times.

Requirements

Essential

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English, Maths, and Science.
  • Strong understanding of traffic signal installations, controllers, and basic traffic signalling theory.
  • Knowledge of roadside signs, equipment, systems, and basic electrical fault-finding.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including at height.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Strong organisational skills with a proactive, professional attitude.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in traffic signals, highways, ITS, or electrical infrastructure.
  • Sector 8 Accreditation or equivalent traffic management experience.
  • Electrical qualification or relevant engineering apprenticeship.
  • Experience in commissioning traffic signal equipment.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and traffic signal maintenance practices.
