✨ Traffic Signals Engineer (Field Engineering) – Leeds

Permanent Position | Department: Operations

We’re seeking a reliable and enthusiastic Field Engineering Technician to join our team in Leeds, tasked with maintaining and supporting critical roadside traffic technology including signals, signs, and ITS equipment.


What You’ll Do

This role is for a highly skilled professional responsible for:

  • Maintaining, fault-finding, and supporting traffic signals, signs, and ITS assets across the region.
  • Ensuring safety, compliance, and operational efficiency for our customers’ transportation infrastructure.
  • Performing both planned and reactive maintenance, diagnosing faults, and completing commissioning activities along with contractual obligations.

Your responsibilities will span across key areas such as:

  • Preventative and reactive maintenance of traffic controllers and roadside equipment.
  • Fault diagnosis and repair of electrical, electronic, and communication systems.
  • Assisting with installation, testing, and commissioning of upgrades.
  • Meeting SLA response targets and ensuring adherence to health, safety, and quality standards.
  • Supporting standby and out-of-hours duties in line with the rota.
  • Documentation and compliance—accurate record-keeping, quality checks, and risk assessment.
  • Professional representation of SWARCO while fostering positive relationships with stakeholders.

Your Key Responsibilities

Field Maintenance & Operations:

  • Conduct routine and emergency traffic signal and ITS equipment maintenance.
  • Identify and repair electrical/electronic faults, including communication and power system issues.
  • Install, verify, and commission new technology (upgrades, retrofits, or infrastructure).

Compliance & Performance:

  • Ensure alignment with contractual SLA (response/repair times) and customer obligations.
  • Accurately complete all technical and safety reports within deadlines.
  • Support environmental, health, and safety (H&S) initiatives.

Safety & professionalism:

  • Operate with ** safety at height competence**.
  • Maintain safe work practice with company vehicles, tools, and PPE.
  • Demonstrate a professional approach both in the field and interface with colleagues.

Requirements

Essential:

  • *GCSE passes (or internationally recognised equivalence) in English, Maths, and Science.
  • Practical understanding of traffic signal installations and basic traffic control theory.
  • Familiarity with traffic controllers, roadside signs, and ITS equipment interfacing.
  • Basic electrical knowledge, including fault-finding skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in dynamic environments.
  • Confidence in working at height and in variable outdoor conditions.
  • Scottish Drive (or UK full licence) is a must.
  • Strong organisation, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Desirable (Bonus Credentials):

  • Previous experience in roadside signs, levelling systems, ITS, or electrical infrastructure.
  • Sector 8 accreditation or equivalent traffic management credentials.
  • Electrical qualifications (Level 2/3) or related engineering apprenticeships.
  • Hands-on experience with traffic signal commissioning.
  • Awareness of industry standards and WHAMA/ITSS/TSGI protocols.
