Summary
This role provides an opportunity to develop practical accounting skills while working alongside experienced professionals. You will receive training and support throughout your development, with the opportunity to work towards further accountancy qualifications and build a long-term career in the profession.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Maintaining bookkeeping records for a range of clients
- Processing sales and purchase invoices, expenses and bank transactions
- Completing bank and other account reconciliations
- Assisting with the preparation of year-end accounts, management accounts and information for tax returns
- Supporting the preparation of VAT returns
- Assisting with payroll processing, including gathering payroll information, entering data accurately and checking payroll reports
- Responding to straightforward client queries and escalating more complex issues to experienced team members
- Requesting missing information from clients and keeping client records up to date
- Using accounting, payroll and spreadsheet software
- Maintaining organised and accurate electronic files
- Handling client information confidentially and following professional and data-protection requirements
- Supporting work connected with HMRC and Companies House, under appropriate supervision
- Supporting the wider Brown & Rear team with general accountancy and administrative tasks

What you'll learn
- Assist with the investigation of, and response to, financial information queries.
- Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
- Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements, and report financial information to users of accounts.
- Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
- Reconcile financial data, such as preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
- Investigate, resolve, or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
- Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
- Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
- Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
- Communicate using a range of approaches and media, with an understanding of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
Training schedule
The successful candidate will undertake a full review of their existing skills versus what is required in their new role. First Intuition will then advise on the best apprenticeship programme for them. This will be a structured AAT Apprenticeship programme at Levels 3 (depending on candidate’s experience and knowledge). A blend of classroom and online training will support the candidate to achieve a well-recognised accountancy qualification which will both help with their new role and potentially lead on to further study.

Training and support includes:
- A structured induction and training plan
- Supervision from experienced accountancy staff
- Practical training in bookkeeping, accounts preparation, VAT and payroll
- Protected time for apprenticeship study and coursework
- Support to complete the Level 3 Assistant Accountant qualification
- Regular reviews of your progress, accuracy and understanding
Requirements
Essential qualifications
- GCSE in: English (grade 6 or above)
- Maths (grade 6 or above)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
- Previous experience working in an accountancy practice (Desirable)
- Completion of AAT Level 3, or currently studying towards it (Desirable)
- Previous experience in an accounts, finance or administration role (Desirable)
