About The Role

We’re looking for a Trainee Accountant to join our Finance team at Matalan Head Office. As a Trainee Accountant, you’ll be working alongside a group of both part and fully qualified accountants and will be given the opportunity to take on real responsibility early in your career. A key priority of the role is to drive value and challenge across the business by building effective working relationships.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Build strong relationships and act as a business partner to key areas across the business, ensuring transparency and a clear understanding of the cost base.
  • Deliver timely and accurate financial information – particularly through cost reviews – with stakeholder needs front of mind.
  • Identify opportunities to challenge costs and improve profitability, working closely with teams to put ideas into action.
  • Accurately account for costs in line with International Financial Reporting Standards.

About You

  • Academically strong and highly numerate. Subject-relevant A-Level or degree qualifications (e.g. Finance, Economics, Maths, Chemistry) are preferable but not essential.
  • Committed to studying towards the CIMA qualification alongside full-time work.
  • Comfortable managing changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills – confident, engaging, and able to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proactive, eager to learn, and ready to take on increasing responsibility as your career develops.
