2 X Trainee Accounts Payable Clerk – Subcontractor Ledger

Location: Stoke on Trent, ST1 5SH

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, hybrid working

We are recruiting 2 Trainee Accounts Payable Clerks to join our friendly Finance team at our Head Office in Stoke-on-Trent. This is a great opportunity to build practical experience in a busy, supportive environment. You will receive structured training to help you learn how to process invoices and payments, maintain accurate records and support colleagues and subcontractors across the UK.

You do not need previous accounts payable experience to apply. We are looking for someone with a positive attitude, attention to detail and a genuine interest in developing a career in finance. You will learn from experienced colleagues, receive a thorough induction and gradually take on more responsibility as your confidence grows. Hybrid working supports a healthy work/life balance, with typical hours of 8.30am–5.00pm Monday to Friday. Flexible start and finish times are also available.

An outline of your responsibilities as a Trainee Accounts Payable Clerk

  • Learn how to record subcontractor invoices and match them to purchase orders using our COINS system.
  • Support the processing of subcontractor invoices and payments.
  • Help prepare weekly, month-end and same-day payment runs.
  • Send remittances and statements of deduction following payment runs.
  • Respond professionally to queries from subcontractors and colleagues, with support when needed.
  • Spot and investigate differences in records, escalating issues to the team.
  • Build your knowledge of accounts payable processes, systems and financial controls.
  • Become familiar with HMRC guidelines for CIS/DRC.

About You

As our Trainee Accounts Payable Clerk, you will be organised, reliable and keen to learn. You should be comfortable working with numbers, have a good eye for detail and be confident using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Outlook. Clear communication and a helpful approach are important, as you will work with colleagues and subcontractors every day. Previous finance experience or knowledge of COINS would be helpful but is not essential, we will provide the training, guidance and support you need. Whether you are leaving education, changing career or looking for your first office-based finance role, we would be pleased to hear from you.
