Role Description
The Trainee Anatomical Pathology Technologist will work full-time on-site at University Hospital in Coventry, supporting the mortuary and histopathology services under supervision. Day-to-day tasks may include:

- Assisting with the reception and identification of deceased persons
- Preparing bodies for viewing and post-mortem examination
- Maintaining accurate records and documentation in line with legal and ethical standards

The trainee will help ensure that mortuary facilities, equipment, and work areas are kept clean, safe, and compliant with infection prevention and control procedures. The role also involves supporting pathologists and senior technologists during post-mortem examinations, handling specimens, and learning standard operating procedures. The postholder will be expected to participate in training activities, follow guidance from experienced staff, and contribute to a respectful, dignified, and sensitive service for families, visitors, and colleagues.
Qualifications
- Foundational knowledge in biological or biomedical sciences, with an interest in anatomy, pathology, and post-mortem processes.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy in record-keeping, and the ability to follow protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work compassionately and professionally with colleagues, families, and external agencies.
- Emotional resilience, discretion, and respect for dignity and confidentiality when working in mortuary and bereavement environments.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team, take direction from senior staff, and adapt to a structured training program.
- Competence in basic IT systems and data entry; willingness to learn laboratory and mortuary information systems.
- Commitment to health and safety, infection prevention and control, and adherence to relevant legislation and professional standards.
- Educated to at least Level 3 (e.g., A-levels or equivalent), preferably in a science-related subject; previous experience in a healthcare or laboratory setting is an advantage but not essential.
